John McDougall - a physician - is a prominent and respected national spokesperson on the important subject of healthful personal nutrition, a lifetime passion. In fact, Dr. McDougall appears at length in the critically-acclaimed DVDs entitled FORKS OVER KNIVES, and FORKS OVER KNIVES: THE EXTENDED INTERVIEWS - available here on AMAZON.
In the FORKS OVER KNIVES: THE EXTENDED INTERVIEWS DVD, select the "scene selection" feature on the main menu, then select the "interview" of Dr. McDougall.
HOWEVER, unless you are particularly attracted to the "Twelve Days" idea discussed in McDOUGALL PROGRAM, I suggest that you take a look at John McDougall's THE STARCH SOLUTION, which is a long-term, strategic dietary approach to one's personal, life-long nutrition.
THE STARCH SOLUTION addresses the important and extremely practical dietary factor of a person's feelings of satiety, or stomach fullness to curb appetite, as determined by what foods a person consumes. Stomach satiety is a subject which is rarely addressed in nutrition literature or, I believe, is considered by most people when making dietary choices.
Starch promotes a person's feelings of satiety, while simultaneously providing requisite energy. Feelings of satiety is a powerful foil to a person's desire to consume excess amounts of food, ergo, excessive calories that contribute to unhealthy weight gain - obesity.
McDOUGALL PROGRAM was published in 1990. THE STARCH SOLUTION was published in 2012 - 22 years later. THE STARCH SOLUTION represents John McDougall's most recent thinking about nutrition.
Suggested additional reading: T. Colin Campbell's recent (copyright 2013) book entitled THE LOW-CARB FRAUD - to debunk disbelievers in starch (carbohydrates).

I am in my early 50's and was having so much joint pain and strange ailments popping up. I knew something had to change so I gave it a try. I am shocked how simple it was to make the switch. I've lost 14 lbs. in 4 months (148 to 134lbs.) and I feel that all I've done is eat lots of potatoes! My husband is off all heart medications, my daughter's reflux and headaches are gone, and my joints are back to normal. I highly recommend this book and don't be put off by the date it was published, everything is still relevant today and now there is just more research to support it.
The book is fantastic as it has shopping lists and recipes for every meal, great for a novice like me. The Onion, Lettuce and Tomato recipe was not enough food for us (I recommend adding hummus), but all the other recipes were great.
I encourage everyone to try the 12 day challenge, preferably testing their blood before and after. You will be shocked how good you feel and how much better your labs are. For us, irritations such as our heart burn, constipation, acne (me…yes as an adult), menstrual cramps (again, me) went away. Our allergies markedly improved. Even more important, it protects us from dementia, cancer, heart disease, autoimmune disorders and osteoporosis.

Note that the McDougall forum has the the contents of the low fat vegan lifestyle program on the website for free, but the book has far more info in it re anecdotal evidence and research.
I didn't realise that there was a weightloss version of the book (which is more or less the same but a bit more stringent). The forum/website also has details of that plan on too, free of charge.
Definitely a book worth getting.
