There are official low clearances and there are the unofficial low clearances caused by trees. Sticking to truck routes as much as possible help us avoid areas where trees have not been trimmed off by passing trucks such that we don't hit them. Low trees are just as bad as a low bridges or power lines, they can damage your A/C, roof, and side walls, not to mention scratch the paint severely.
We drive a Winnebago Journey 36M and we need 12 feet 6 inches of clearance. We also flat tow a car so we are 42 feet long and can not backup with out unhooking the car. This atlas has helped us stick to routes that accommodate large vehicles.
