I've been a Billy Strings fan for a number of years. He's a bluegrass up-and-comer (actually, I think he's arrived) who just draws the audience in and makes you feel like he's playing just for you. His admiration for his dad just makes him all the more special an artist and person. This recording of "old school" bluegrass tunes featuring Billy, and Terry Barber -- the man who raised him and taught him to play -- is quite special. I wish they'd do more live shows together.

Did anyone else who purchased the LP version experience scratches, smudges, and fingerprints on the grooves? Extremely disappointed in the condition of this album when played for the first time. A couple tracks had very noticeable pops, clicks, and just not what you expect from a new record. Almost looks as though it was used but perhaps that happened as a quality control issue in the manufacturing process. I’ve ordered a replacement.

Ist of all, I was hoping for a less flimsy cardboard for the cd. 2nd, I wanted the vinyl but it's rising in prices so quick I had to settle for the cd. The music is definitely more traditional bluegrass. Very enjoyable on First listen. Anything Billy does is great!

What a treasure! We ordered the cd first chance we got. The family harmony and comfortable feel of the music make this a truly special recording. From the first play we couldn't get enough and every subsequent play it only gets better and better. All of the guest musicians blend in well with the comfortable feel of the music, it's like you are at home after Sunday pot-roast sitting on the front porch and grandpa pulls out the guitar and all the kin join in. This is a must have!

I was a wee bit apprehensive when I saw the announcement for this album. Was it just one for Dad or a proper record? No worries. It's near perfect. The truth is, I'm not sure anything involving Billy Strings at the moment could be anything but. Terry Barber's voice made me think of Burl Ives, but more from the warm feeling than the sound. The song choices are wonderful, and the musicians are faultless. Given who they are that's unsurprising. Billy's regular band are always a joy but the guys here have been doing it for so long that they feel kind of perfect. Songs like 'Way Downtown' are always great to hear, and Jody Stecher's version is still my favourite, but it's also wonderful here. Standouts for me are 'Long Journey Home', 'Peartree', 'John Deere Tractor' (the best!) and 'Frosty Morn' but there is absolutely no filler. 'Heard My Mother Weeping' featuring Billy's Mum on vocals is a charming closer. Try to catch the 'making of' video. Great stories and here's hoping the other tracks mentioned see the light of day too. You can't have too much of a really great thing.

C'è anche qualche strumentale, dove emerge ancora meglio la bravura di tutti i musicisti, e, insomma, la piacevolezza è estrema. In fondo c'è il marchio Rounder, etichetta che in questo genere va a nozze. Bel disco di genere, quindi, fresco e diretto, che omaggia in maniera perfetta il patrigno di Billy ma anche la madre, che canta, emozionata, l'ultima canzone, "I Heard My Mother Weeping", con il cerchio che si chiude. Bello.
