Illuminating.. you are sitting with the author and having a conversation, .you know power is intoxicating...and that not all Mean Men carry on like loud boors. Some charming Tyrants have soft voices. and all sense vulnerability. Form the author you learn that one common thread.they share is that they don'
t do anything that they think they cannot win. They are vindictive. Its a game. the game is to win. more, better, risk...In this book you gain insight as you recognize those you knew or know. Those who you heard about and come face to face with their lack of an empathy chip that gives them the undisputed crown that they wear thinking that they are invincible. Pathology, yes you can label them in that category. to them it doesn't matter. Mark Lipton's book is an incredible dive into who they are and what makes them tick. And at the end, he sits you down and with the clearest guidance and a sense of hope shares with you how to not get fractured by their behavior. He contrasts them with those who ask people to stretch to be even more. those who have compassion, courage, humility those who are bold without being arrogant, They are all there, every name you will recognize. I read Mean Men on the kindle and have the hard copy too. Its worth spending a few hours with the hard copy. I would read it again. The research, the fascinating facts, the integrity of the author, makes this a book to share. We come face to face with Jobs, Armstrong, Ballmer, Charney from A-Z the mean men peppered with those you can admire, this book should be on every business book list.

With wild man CEOs like Travis Kalanick and Martin Shkreli in the news so much lately, with Donald Trump's seeming inability to make factual statements and calling others liars, you have to wonder what's going on in this world. Mark Lipton has the answer: a sub-clinical psychopathic personality disorder he calls Mean Men syndrome.

Lipton is a management guru and professor at the New School in New York, where he's been studying this phenomenon for nearly 20 years. He takes the reader through the science behind the psychopathy, giving real world examples that will leave you feeling deeply trouble. And he lays out the two problems we have to face if we want to deal with this issue of leadership malfeasance. The first problem is the Mean Men themselves. The second problem is us.

Why do we put up with this behavior? Why do we work for these people, invest in them, vote for them? Because the only way we can stop them is if we stop ourselves from enabling them. Because they can't change their behavior. They never will.

Mean Men is full of fascinating and timely research on what drives the irresponsible leaders of our time, and it is cleverly written to boot. Mark Lipton hits the nail on the head with his deep psychological critique of our culture that we not only tolerate but we celebrate psychopaths as heroes. (And not the kind of violent psychopaths we typically see in the movies!) He shows how we use financial measures to irrationally attribute worldly success (and sanity!) to billion dollar companies and billionaires, even when a company or leader is actually built on shaky ground. For anyone who wants to get a fresh take on what defines responsible and effective leadership, Mean Men is a must read.

Right on target and apropos of what we're dealing with

This book is right on target in terms of what is happening now in our culture and in our politics. It was interesting to read about what has been happening for years and the appalling behavior that many big name men thought was their birthright and carried on with seeming impunity. It's only through delving into and exposing this runaway and inexcusable modus operandi that we as a society can begin to set limits. Only when "mean" men know that their awful behavior won't be tolerated will we emerge with a society that has the ability to regulate itself. Lipton does a great job in exposing these men's antics, describing the repercussions they have for real people and importantly he also discusses the flip side: how effective good men leaders (who have also have power) can be.

Some powerful corporate executives exhibit signs of a personality disorder called psychopathy? Is that word related to psychopath? I found out that the answer to both questions is “Yes”!

“Mean Men” unflinchingly explores the extreme behavior of certain high-profile men who are idolized, some right up to the point when the “news breaks”. Much like our reaction after listening to the neighbor of a serial murderer, when reading the stories in the book you wonder at first how there were no signs. Of course, there are signs. The book opened my eyes to the disorder, the societal structures that allow for the continued existence of bad behavior and the need to act. Mr. Lipton provides a wonderfully readable narrative on a dark topic, providing the stories of individuals mixed with the clinical evaluation.

Mr. Lipton also works in his own personal experiences which I found connected me to the author and his genuine search for understanding. But the power of the book lies in its call to action. The author does not just show us the ugly and weak side of humanity but ends by showing us the beautiful and strong. When asked about human nature, Michael Caine, the actor, said “I don’t believe humankind is inherently evil. I believe we are inherently weak”. I hope that this book helps you find your strength to stand for what is noble and life affirming.
