Declining morale, lower productivity, burnout and lack of advancement make work seem like a grind. Plummeting employee engagement is a global phenomenon, especially in developed nations, but there is a remedy: add meaning to your corporate culture. Author Gurnek Bains (writing with Kylie Bains) teaches that making your employees' work more meaningful can reinvigorate their engagement, and improve your profits, productivity and public relations. getAbstract finds plenty of depth in Bains' argument that companies prosper and people work better when they know that their labor serves a greater good. Using studies and analysis, he demonstrates why leaders who want energized employees should begin by explaining what their work really means.

America's oldest game is now making outreaches around the globe. Baseball offers its fans intensity, detail, and fun. Statistical information is used by players, coaches, and fans to win a game or an argument with a rival. Various management strategies are enacted by ball clubs to address issues including recruitment (buy players vs. homegrown) and style of play (disciplined vs. aggressive).
In case you can't tell: I'm a business guy who loves baseball. And what Gurnek Bain taught me about both is this: Due my due diligence, but don't forget about the big-picture. The essence of the work your organization does - it's "Meaning" -- affects everything from branding to recruitment. So I give credit to the Brits for being on to this before us Americans, like they were in regard to Rounders (baseball's predecessor game). But now it's on us to take their thinking and insights, and build our own glorious version that would make Ty Cobb and Moses Walker proud.

Excellent piece of work, even more relevant now than when I read it in 2006

An excellent piece of work, even more relevant now than when I first read it in 2006.
I only wish I'd read it again sooner, I could have avoided a few corporate land mines!
