I have a large collection of digital comics and a new Kindle Fire, so I decided to try this program to see how nicely my comics displayed. I was a bit worried about readability because of the size of the Kindle Fire screen, but it turns out that my comics were completely and easily readable, due to the Kindle's high resolution screen. Plus, if I needed a zoom-in, I only had to turn the Fire to landscape position, and the comics automatically turned into a closeup (I have the view set to width of screen). This app has a ton of options, so you can customize it to whatever you like best. To upload my comics, I simply connected the Fire to my PC via a USB cable, created a new folder called "comic books" on the Fire's internal memory and drag-n-dropped them in. Comicat scanned for new comics, found them and displayed them on its bookshelf. I only had problems opening and viewing one file, and I think it might have been corrupted by the transfer, or maybe in too high a resolution. I'll have to experiment and re-upload it, but it was just one file out of about sixty or seventy transfered comics. Not a big deal. No app is really perfect, but this one was very satisfactory to me.

This app has every feature I want from a comic reader and really works well on the Kindle Fire. The frequent updates are fantastic, as well.

After experimenting with all the options, I have found these settings make the most of the Fire's screen size:

-Reading with the Fire held horizontally, not vertically, and keeping the default option of "fit to width" that kicks in whenever you hold it this way. Reading with the Fire upright is just a tad bit too small for comics. This method is closest to replicating Guided View from comiXology, though it does require a good bit of scrolling.

-Crop Margins. With the limited size of the screen, this cuts out the unessential blocks of white surrounding the images without zooming in too much and causing blur. (definitely do this if you plan on reading with the Fire held upright)

-Keep Splits. The default setting separates two-page splashes as two separate pages. I found changing it to one image works best in horizontal mode.

I was looking for an app to read my manta on my new Kindle. I decided to give this one a try and it works great! The one thing I was looking forward to with my Kindle Fire was reading comics and with this app I can do that!

I recently purchased a Kindle Fire HD 8.9, and I couldn't wait to read comics on the tablet's amazing screen. ComiCat had good reviews, so I decided to give it a whirl, hoping it would be comparable to Comic Zeal for iOS, which if you don't know, is the greatest thing in the history of ever.

Well, ComiCat definitely isn't Comic Zeal. But, it's a perfectly adequate comic book reader. You can upload a variety of formats, most notably CBR, and ComiCat automatically finds and perfectly renders your comics. There's just a lack of options here. I'd love to create collections, but you can't make folders within the app. You can somewhat get around this by importing your comics within folders, but even then they aren't ideally organized.

Still, the app is functional and stable. It's worth a purchase, until something like Comic Zeal is ported to Android.

UPDATE:

Throw out my previous criticisms of ComiCat. The developers solved every issue I had with their most recent update. The file system is not only useful here, but now there are COLLECTIONS! Good lord that's an awesome addition. Also, the UI has received an update and feels far more modern. Swiping from the left side of the screen also brings up all of ComiCat's great reader options without abandoning the page you're reading.

ComiCat is now the best comic reader for Android. $2.99 is a steal for how much ComiCat now offers.

Thinking about deleting and reloading this app. Worked fine for a few days after purchase. Then just locks up. Using a FREE app now that is currently still working. . .

The creators of the software, actually contacted me and helped resolve the issue! This is UNHEARD OF customer service on a $3 package. Here, their product didn't cause my maladay. One of their competitors packages [thoroughly researched] caused it. A re-install took care of the problem. The issue, was that the "other" package rewrote some settings also used by Comicat. Reinstallation, put those corrupted files back to fully functional. VOILA! I've now recommended this package to a few coworkers, who are just as happy. This is THEE comic-reader of choice. Ready for the catch-phrase?

Comicat is where it's AT!

TL;DR Edition: works well and has loads of features and customization options, and only one minor bug that I've noticed in the last 3-4 months of using it.

I was burned by another "reader" that insinuated it could read CBRs and the like when it was really just a platform to read comics purchased from the same company, so I was a little hesitant to spend money on what seemed to be the only other option on the Amazon marketplace. If you're where I was at that point: trust me, it's worth it. I'm the kind of person who customizes just about everything as soon as I get my hands on it, and ComiCat gave me enough options to me my head spin. I'm really lazy so my favorite aspect of this app would be the ability to go from then end of one book to the beginning of the next without having to back out, scroll through the list and select the next comic. I'm also SUPER forgetful so it's really handy that it remembers my place and marks comics as read when I've moved on to the next issue.

My one and only gripe is with a small bug either in the app or my Kindle: when I go without using ComiCat for an extended period of time, long enough for the app to be 'closed' for memory reasons, ComiCat will sometimes launch to a comic that I've already read. It's usually only a few issues back, but it's weird because it still remembers my place in the comic I had been reading before setting the book down. It would be much more frustrating if it lost my place entirely, so thankfully it doesn't do that.

Anyway, 10/10 would buy again if you're a comic nerd like me.
