Throughout the book, Migliore compares NDErs who were clinically dead with those individuals who had "NDE-like" experiences and were not clinically dead. The results showed that those who were clinically dead were likely to have a more in-depth experience, but this often did not reach statistical significance. For example, of the 13 categories in the IANDS survey, Migliore reports that, "the clinical death group reported higher incidences of occurrence, but the differences were not statistically significant." In other words, you don't have to die to experience God or the afterlife. This should not be viewed as new information, as both St. Paul (II Cor 12) and Muhammad (Sura 17.1) went to heaven in a mystical experience not associated with dying. Migliore is so impressed with this finding that he calls his website, "Near Life Experience" ([...]). While many researchers (myself included) have noted the similarity between near-death experience and mystical religious experiences, Migliore is the one with the most impressive amount of data!
Even though the book is written from the standpoint of the data, this is a "sweet read" with many descriptive case studies presented to illustrate each aspect of the NDE surveyed. These aspects include: 1) Out-of-body experience, 2) Light, 3) Strong emotional tone, 4) Knowledge, 5) Presence of unearthly beings, 6) Darkness, 7) Encounters out of keeping with beliefs, 8) Landscape or city, 9) Presence of deceased persons, 10) Void, 11) Boundary, 12) Life Review, and 13) Vision of the future.
This book is a "must-read" for NDE researchers, religious experience researchers, and anyone with a serious interest in NDEs and spiritually transformative experiences.
