This kit is a big step up from Meccano’s Micronoid line for ages 8+ and which features less than 200 parts. At 10+, this T-Rex has more than 750 parts and requires building the dinosaur frame around the centrally located heavy battery pack (acts both as the power source and the T-Rex’s ballast-like torso), proper positioning of the LED eyes, and connecting the ports for the eyes, battery and programmable unit via cables.
The fun in this project for the 10+ age range is the building challenge itself. Seeing the assembled nuts and bolts come spectacularly to life was thrilling and gave my son a real sense of accomplishment. One challenge: when in attack mode, the T-Rex did a face plant. The forward movement and weight could not be supported. Using his STEAM knowledge, my son corrected that imbalance by simply extending the 16” tail another 7” with repurposed parts.
For me, that’s the real interactivity in this product; when your engineer uses his own programmable brain to problem solve a design flaw. T-Rex is a complex and rewarding engineering project.
The instructions were decent but had a few errors in it. There were only pictures and a picture and number count of the next item you needed.
On one page the bolt patterns were done one way. On a page later bolt patterns were different. I had to do a lot of flipping back and forth to verify I had the right piece. My son had issues using the wrench as did I. The hex driver they give you isn't too bad but my fingers started hurting after a while. There were about 715 pieces and lots of screws, nuts, and various little pieces. Overall it took me 5 hours to complete.
It is programable and so far easy to work. It does not do well on carpet at all. Be sure to read up on the programming portion. I found four steps is not four pushes of the forward Button. It turned out to be like 20 steps (exaggerating). After you read the manual this part is pretty easy to pick up.
The battery compartment takes four "C" batteries and require you to remove two bolts and nuts you spent so long contorting your fingers to install. I think that should be a redesign.
You can program it, let it do things randomly, and set it to guard.
I am very torn about the rating for it. I believe it's a cool toy. My son will like it now that it's done. It costs too much for all the work you have to put into it. I purchased mine as an open box with everything still sealed and got a decent discount but still thought it was too much.
I think I would have enjoyed it more if my son could have assisted me more. This is definitely for a child 10+. Tightening the nuts and boots were not hard but very tedious. On a few occasions where I am assembling the neck I have to attach 8 nuts and bolts. I couldn't get my fingers in the areas very easily and I kept dropping the nuts. I would recommend magnetizing your wrench and driver if you must assemble it by yourself. I do recommend it but only if you can get a discount. It is a awesome challenge and if you like challenges I would recommend it.
I've takes photos of some of the errors in the manual and made a video so you can see it function.
