I've been impressed with the engineering of rotating lead mechanism and showed it off to my co workers who also though it was cool. If you wanted to test out whether the lead really was self sharping peel off a small piece of tape, mark the edges, and stick it to your lead tip. Every time you press down the lead it will rotate slightly keeping the writing tip sharp.
I have found that it works as advertised and keeps the writing tip sharp. Grant it probably not that big a difference to the average user I enjoy the small attention to detail provided by this pen.
Of the three Kurutoga models I have I would say the Alpha-Gel is my favorite. Overall the Kurutoga line of pencils are definitely nice I just wish they had come with larger erasers.
Check out the attached pictures to see the difference between the three models!
Now onto the Kuru Toga Engine, it spins the lead around as you write, but if you write in cursive you will see the benefit from this action much less frequently. The mechanism requires liftoff and touchdown of the writing head to rotate the lead. When you don't do that it just feels like a squishy pencil. I can totally see how using thisto write in languages like Japanese and Korean or Chinese would get the most benefit with the multitude of shorter strokes.
