Speros Vryonis is a historians historian, namely all of his works are well researched and eminently readable. Unfortunately, he does not always choose his titles well. The pogrom which he documents in detail, was the pogrom against the Greeks in Istanbul in September 1955, which broke the backs of the Greek bourgeoisie in that ancient Byzantine city. .The pogrom, which devastated Greek stores and properties, effectively brought an end to significant Greek life in the city. .Of course, the Armenian bourgeoisie had been destroyed and the genocide of 1915-1923. The Jewish bourgeoisie still survives but only on a relatively small-scale and at the price of presenting themselves as ideal citizens of Turkey who totally buyin to the system

After two attempts to purchase this book (from other vendors), I finally received it! This book is important to me since I was living in Istanbul at the time of the pogrom, and both my father and uncle were victims of the destruction.
Thank you Amazon for giving me the opportunity to purchase it!

Spiros Vryonis is a wonderful writer and is thorough in his reporting. I can see why the Turkish supporter will not like his writings.

A very exhaustive compilation of facts and figures to support his description of the destruction of the Greek community of Istanbul. A must read for all serious students of the topic and of all those like me who were eyewitnesses of the crime.

Excellent book documenting the 1955 Pogrom in Istanbul Turkey - Riots that were triggered by a false flag bombing operation. They were well prepared, and knew who their target was - the Indigenous population of what has been known in most of history as Constantinople... the Greek Christians, Armenian Christians, Jews and other minorities. A classic example of the fruit of Islam. Where intolerance, destruction and blood reign. We read the history books and see the same pattern over-and-over. These riots were the final nail in the coffin for the indigenous ancient Christian population of Anatolia. The riots, as well as many other actions committed by the provocative Turkish government throughout history are an inspiration to extremists throughout the Islamic world such as Al Qaeda and ISIS. I find it truly astounding that the so-called "democratic-loving" United States government has nothing but praise for this blood stained and bigoted nation. But I suppose this is consistent with their recent sponsorship of Islamic extremists in Syria, Egypt and Iraq. Just this last week the Turkish Prime Minister has announced that there is no such thing as "moderate-Islam" and criticized freedom of speech and media in the West. I guess not much has changed in Turkey. Buy this book and learn about one of the world's biggest crimes against humanity in recent years.

This is a well researched and well written account of the ethnic cleansing/pogrom by the Muslim Turks of the remaining Orthodox Christian Greeks of the city of Istanbul, formerly known as Constantinople on September 6-7. 1955, only 19 years prior to the Turkish invasion of Cyprus.
The author, Speros Vryonis, has produced a lengthy and detailed study of how the attacks were perpetrated and organized by elements of the Turkish government, in their effort to rid their Muslim nation of the few remaining Greek Christians in Turkey who were not sent away as part of the population exchange between Greece and Turkey in 1922 as the consequence of the Treaty of Lausanne. In that agreement, the Muslim Turkish inhabitants of Greece were sent to live in Turkey, and the Greek Christian inhabitants of Turkey were sent to Greece. Many of the Greek Christians of Istanbul escaped this exchange for various reasons, but primarily because of their economic value to the Turks as merchants and operators of businesses.
Although somewhat academic, this book will inform the reader who wishes to understand the history of this orchestrated atrocity by the Turks, and give a greater understanding of the prior genocide of 2,500,000 Armenian, Greek and Assyrian Christians from 1890 through 1921 by the Turks, as well as the 1974 invasion of Cyprus and the current efforts of Turkey to re-take the Greek islands along its coastline. Vryonis' work has a wealth of facts and figures regarding casualties, and reparations.
