Review

Have you ever wanted to pilot a huge metal suit armed with lasers, particle cannons, and homing missiles? You will - and the company that will bring it to you is Activision. Other mech games may claim to be a great combination of simulation and action, but only MechWarrior 2 comes close to the mark.

MechWarrior 2 on the PC was an incredibly intense and detailed game. There were controls for just about every function imaginable. The game featured numerous missions, many taking a lot of time and skill to complete. The PlayStation version is different from the original in many ways: The controls have been tailored for the system, and the game has been retooled, with a more intense focus on action. The result is game that will receive decidedly mixed reviews. Fans of the original will likely feel the game has been watered down to appease the younger-skewing console demographic. While this may be true, fans of video games will discover a truly fun shoot-em-up.

MW2's graphics are nice from a distance, but up close the moving polygons (especially the parts of a mech, which scatter when destroyed) look pretty pathetic. The fiery explosions look good, but usually result in lame-looking mech parts flying about. The in-game music is just plain bad, and the rest of the game's sound effects are merely adequate.

The control is a bit strange at times. But after little use, control becomes second nature. The default settings are nowhere near what the game can truly do, however, as they don't allow targeting or torso twisting. This means the default setting forces you to line up your shots by hand and always face the direction you wish to shoot. After messing with the default setting for ten minutes, you'll want to configure your controls to one of the full-featured settings. Suffice to say that without torso twists and targeting, you probably won't make it out of the first few missions.

The game features 16 new missions and 32 re-worked versions of popular PC campaigns. From the main menu you can choose between the Wolf Clan and Jade Falcon squads or use the "instant action" feature to get right into battle. Either way, expect to spend a lot of time blowing stuff up - each mission revolves around destroying something (regardless of whether your mission is offensive or defensive). This is a very good thing.

If you were a serious fan of the PC version, you might want to check this out for the new missions alone. Just keep in mind that there isn't as much strategy involved in this "Arcade Combat Edition." For those of you who want a quick-and-dirty combat simulator with a lot of things to shoot, and can get past the uninspired graphics, MW2 fits the bill nicely. --Jeff Gerstmann

The Mechwarrior series of games is on of the best on PC. This translation to Playstation does a pretty good job. The graphics are decent and the sound is phenomenal with a great soundtrack that really gets the blood pumping. The two different ways you can go through the game are fun, and the difficulty levels add a lot of challenge. It would have been nice to have a two player, head-to-head option.
This is definitely a fun game that will always have replay value.

I picked this game up for super cheap recently, and expected it to be another throw-away PlayStation game good for an hour or two of amusement, not the gem that it turned out to be.

I never really got to play this game on PC game in the day because I didn't own a computer powerful enough to run it, and had trouble with the controls. A lot of PC conversions to PlayStation games have terrible controls that are almost impossible to use (I'm looking at you Civilization and Wing Commander), but the controls in this game are fast, smooth, and responsive (and available as a reminder or to change between every level).

The graphics are more simple than the PC version, but they are likewise fast and smooth and absolutely outstanding if you like simple solid polygon graphics. The gameplay surprised me greatly. Most games like this are so hard (mostly due to the complexity of controls and relentlessness of enemies) that you are dying constantly and getting frustrated. Playing this game on the other hand, it felt very well balanced and was really fun. While your customization and control options are very limited compared to the PC version, you can jump right in and start blasting Mechs and have a great time. The music is great too.

The only downside seems to be that this game was made before memory card saving was standard on games. You get codes to enter to continue progress (yuck). Still, for an afternoon or evening of classic Mech blasting on your PlayStation, it's hard to beat this game.

This game is the only game where you can play as either the wolf clan or the jade falcon clan. The only problem is that the Timber Wolf's arms are to long. If you have this game put in

There was a day when this was the bomb and still is. However I traded my old playstation to get an xbox game and traded this title along with it. I have all the PC versions so I'm good. :)

Although the graphics look like the Matrox Mystiqe PC 3d- accelarated version of MW2. it is fun, i have not played it, but i have seen some trialers of gameplay, so it looks like it is worth to buy. Plus one more thing to people who have a PS2, this game is PS2 compatible if you ever knew.

This game would be worth to but indeed
