Product Description

Size: 351

Chimney-like design with a loose-fitting, vented lid and tight-fitting doors creates a constant flow of new smoke for maximum flavor. Smoke flow may be minimized, without extinguishing the smoking source, by shutting all vents and only allowing smoke to vent around hood perimeter. Slow cooking feature allows for maximum flavor and moisture, perfecting a juicy and tender product with less effort. Temperature gauge is for reference only. Extreme temperatures or high winds may shorten or lengthen the cooking process. A meat thermometer should always be used to determine doneness. Reference cooking guide located in manual or online. If I had been able to see one of these smokers in the store I would not have bought it. It seems poorly made and doesn't fit together very well. But since I bought it and went to the trouble of putting it together, we gave it a try. It works! We've used it every weekend since we got it - ham, chicken, sausage - everything is great. I don't know how long this thing is going to last, but I'm going to use it until it falls apart - then buy something else.

4 Stars? Yes...for what it is.
About 12 years ago I got this little smoker, actually I got the electric version (which is identical except it has a removable element on the bottom, but can also be used as a charcoal smoker). Long story short: After a few years the electrical element started to spark, and to Meco's credit, they sent me a brand new one free! I used that for about a year and then decided to go with charcoal.

It actually did a damn good job! Yes, it is made in China with thin metal, but to be honest it is much better than the sum of it's parts! I used it many times, ribs, chicken, fish, sausage even a whole turkey, to great success. The real downside is the capacity. So when I was able to buy a used but like-new 22" Weber kettle Performer, and set it up as a smoker, the little Meco got put aside.

But I still have it! I always kept it covered and living in So. Calif. the weather is never a real factor so it still looks good. I am now a BBQ competition judge and want to improve my own skills, so I now need something larger than even my Weber.

Final recommendation: A good little smoker for someone who is new to doing real BBQ. Put the charcoal in with a wood chunk (advice: don't overdo the wood! A single 2" square is all you need on top of the charcoal). This isn't for a crowd, but you can do enough of the smaller baby back ribs for 4 people easily as it has two levels of cooking area. Also I do not recommend if you live in a cold area as the unit is not well insulated for "winter smoking". Another thing, the temp gauge, as with most smokers...even a Weber, is not that accurate, so get a probe to measure the air temp or a good gauge you can mount.

Who knows...maybe I'll get the little guy out and fire it up once again!

After several hours of searching and reading reviews of many different budget smokers I bought the Meco 5031. Easy enough to assemble. Kinda cheaply made, but it is a budget unit. I did check out the competition (under a $100) at the Big Box stores and they were cheaply made also. You get what you pay for! I have used this smoker once and it did a fairly good job. The Pulled Pork tasted great, was tender and moist. I did find it difficult to regulate the heat with the vents in the lid of the unit. Could best control in side heat by adding small chunks of lump coal at a time and leaving the top vents wide open. Hopefully with more practice I'll get this part down better. So, if your on a very tight budget this will get the job done with a little bit of babysitting. If your budget will allow, and you like quality built items, maybe spend the $200 to $300 for a better unit.

The paint on mine caught fire. Mfg. did some good service, but the bottom line is that compared to my old Char-Broil H2O smoker that never flaked off paint or caught fire, this one does not make the grade.

Great lil smoker. Only downside is temp gauge. It would be better if it was numeric.

This was a bad decision on my part. I bought the smoker two weeks ago and have smoked food twice so far. The second time I was smoking a slab of baby backs the temperature gauge said ideal and all of the sudden I noticed smoke coming from under the smoker. The paint was smoking and peeling off. I read another review here where a customer mentioned that theirs has caught fire. Being afraid of my smoker catching fire I reacted immediately with a fire extinguisher. I bought this unit at the home depot and also got a cover for it. What a waste of money (and food). The lid does not fit properly, I have to sort of squeeze the smoker in order for the lid to fit. The only reason why I didn't give this smoker 1 star is because it looks nice. I like the design of it, but the material it is made out of is garbage. Save yourself some trouble, this unit is not worth $10 in my opinion. Customer service at Meco is non existent.

This is the unit you need for low temperature smoking. Once temperature has settled, a slow even heat is maintained for a very long time. We use one at home and one for catering. We are replacing the home unit after ten years and approximately 250 uses. It probably would have lasted longer even longer, but we stored it outside behind the work shed.

Bought this smoker for my son for Christmas. First of all, it arrived about a week before I expected it, which was great. My son has already used it 3 times since Christmas and is just delighted with the results. He says it cooks faster than he expected, but the flavor and juiciness of the meat is terrific. The size is fine too - he has cooked ribs and sausage for 6, and also a whole large chicken. He has already recommended this smoker to a couple of his friends!
