THE GOOD: graphics are of course gorgeous. The level designs are fantastic and exceed expectations. I find myself stopping to look around and go slower to appreciate the landscapes. I'd have to say the most improved is the secret ant level. It looks astounding.
There's an option to use classic controls.
The music is outstanding. Same songs but completely re-recorded.
They added a "lost souls" mission once you beat Zarok.
Some of the boss fights are different and more interesting, a welcome change.
THE BAD: The character designs are a little cutesy and targeted towards kids. Not as bad as Medievil Resurrection, but it's on the level of a Tim Burton movie. Looks good, I just would have loved an MA rating on this.
I don't like that they kept the same voice recordings but changed all the sound effects. I honestly would have preferred the opposite. I never realized how good the original sounds were till I played this. The effects here are completely standard and don't sound unique, while every sound design in the original game is recognizable.
It doesn't FEEL like I'm playing Medievil. This is hard to describe, but the controls and how the vibration responds just doesn't feel the same. There's a lack of satisfaction when you chop down zombies and the motions aren't quite as good. The Spyro remake, for example, felt exactly like a Spyro game. This plays like a standard hack n slash.
Sensory overload. This one might just be me, but there are too many icons/trophy notifications that pop up and when you combine this with flashing lights, the visuals can be hard to take in. I wish there was an option to remove all unessesary notifications.
THE UGLY: It's too damn easy! Aside from the gameplay itself, there are waaaaay too many new hints and tips scattered throughout the game. My least favorite being that an inventory icon will pop up if you can interact with something, effectively removing the difficulty of figuring out the puzzles and where items go. I was able to beat the original game when I was 8. It took me forever and I was sooooo proud that I solved the puzzles by myself. This is even more ridiculous considering that people can just go online if they want easy answers. This game holds your hand way too much.
VERDICT
While I'm a bit disappointed, I still had a blast playing this and it's worth the money. I'm so good at the game that it would be easy regardless, I'm just upset new players won't be given the same challenge. However, I read one review that said the game was too hard, so maybe people do need the extra help? I'm a bit sad that this didn't make the original obsolete, the PS1 version is still the best. Either way, Sir Daniel Fortesque is back baby! Rejoice!
What I'm trying to say is this is the same as the PS2 version but updated for the PS4 format. I appreciate the nostalgia of the game and especially getting it days before halloween. Thank you Sony for a great re-release! I definitely recommend at this price point!
That being said, if you can get beyond the odd difficulty spike post level 3-ish, it is possible to enjoy aspect of MediEvil. You'll eventually adapt to the broken camera-system and avoid getting anywhere near enemies. Obtaining new weapons is fun and completing levels fully can be a good challenge. I just can't help but feel it's a shame not more was done here.
A re-skin wasn't a good choice here, it's arguable that Sir Daniel needed yet another resurrection but I can't help but feel that whatever sorcery was involved here was half-baked.
I wish that some of the trophies were a little harder to get. Maybe a speed trophy for beating the game under 8 hours or so? Or going thru without dying/game over would be cool.
The lost souls that are new to this game are an excellent addition. I just wish they had added some other extra side missions or minigames. Just to have an excuse to keep playing it.
