Received this as a gift off my wishlist. This drive enclosure is an attractive addition to my desk, and when it is properly recognized by Windows 7 and Ubuntu 12.04 'Precise' (see cons), it performs quite well, offering blazing speeds up to 135MB/sec per Roadkil's Disk Speed test.

Pros:
* Easy hardware setup -- attach the brackets to the front of the drives, plug them into their slots, close the case
* Attractive, sleek case with blue indicator lights (one each per drive, fan speed, interface, etc.)
* Power cable has 90° bend for security (it's on the side, which may seem like a con, but really, it keeps it from being tugged out unexpectedly)
* Offers (but see cons)... offers two interface types (eSATA 6GB and USB 3.0)
* Supports read speeds as fast as my hard drives attain when inside the computer (134.99 MB/sec). 2014 Nov update: a WD 4.0TB Purple-series drive installed in this device has attained 150MB/sec sustained write with an SSD as its source.
* Ships with all necessary cables and power adapters
* No setup disk required; just plug in and go (this works best for my system with the orange sync mode enabled)
* Very easy to remove from the system in case of an emergency -- let insurance replace the rest, and keep your data drives safe
* Hardware assembly instructions are quite useful and accurate, and will quickly and easily get you to a ready state (but see cons)
* The device offers a sync mode that has a nice 15-second delay then powers off, when the computer is turned off or put into S3 sleep. This avoids unnecessary drive power-cycling cold reboots or brief, mistaken sleep cycles
* The power supply provides adequate power for four drives, even with all in an active state (e.g.

Very easy to use. Just plug the hard drives in and turn in on. BE SURE to set the switch to the proper connection (USB or eSata) or else the drive enclosure shuts down. This is due to the PowerSync feature. For example, if you are connecting via eSata and the switch is set to USB (default), then the device will detect no power going through USB and shutdown. Apparantely, the other person who gave this item a negative review didn't realise this.

I'm using the Mediasonic HF2-SU3S2 on a PC running Vista, which is connected to a Rosewill RC-219 PCI Express eSata SATA II Controller Card ([...]

Only cons I have, though nothing major is:
1. Power connection is on the side, not the back
2. Takes a few seconds for each drive to power up and be recognized.

I'm planning to buy another enclosure for another PC.

Note: According to the documentation, USB 3.0 connections is backware compatible with USB 1.1 & USB 2.0.

This product is a great addition to anyone interested in consolidating their hard drives. The backwards compatible usb 2.0 port works fine on all of my PCs and on Macs that I've tested it on. It's very easy to set-up (< 5 min) But be sure to read the setup card provided (note: USB 3.0 cable provided with case).

Pros: Put 4 x 2TB harddrives in case and they were instantly accessible on Windows Vista, Windows XP, Windows 7 Ultimate, Ubuntu 10.10, and Snow Leopard.
Cons: None so far. (This is the second one I am buying)

<Update: After 2.5 years of daily use, it is still performing perfectly. Not one single negative comes to mind (other than the whole avoid USB 3.0 issue).>

So far I am loving it. I now have 8TB of eSATA storage for a very small price. It is a little annoying having to break up my files into 4 different drives instead of 1 as I would have via RAID, but I have been burned badly by RAID and have not used it since. Not only is it a LOT cheaper, but should 1 drive fail, I can most likely restore 99% of the files without a problem. With RAID, I lost everything when the RAID controller died and I had nothing that could read any of the drives.

At first, I was trying to use it via USB 3.0, however I apparently had a bad USB 3.0 PCI card because the two USB 3.0 docking stations I tried (including this one), would disconnect whenever I copied over 100 GB to the drive. I have since returned that USB PCI card. SINCE then, I have heard that I am not the only one having the same issue. My guess would be that one of the USB 3.0 chip suppliers has an issue with multiple-disk enclosures, so be wary if you plan on using USB 3.0 with this.

Fortunately, my 2010 Win 7 64 bit Dell Alienware Aurora's eSATA port was preconfigured to allow multiple hard drives on one eSATA cable (aka port multiplier).

I care not about noise, since my HTPC is in the basement, so I have the fan on high and the sync turned off. Having so many hard drives fail over the years most probably due to overheating, I like that this has a fan.

As others have stated it is very well built and it seems odd that they put the multi-pin style powercord is on the side.

Easily handles my 4 x 2TB drives on eSATA and USB3.0. I tested both interfaces and getting over 100MB/sec sustained reads on both interfaces! I am using this for a Windows Home Server (WHS) and it is perfect since it does not do RAID, so that I can let WHS handle folder duplication instead. I intend to buy another one of these to expand my WHS capacity in the near future.

This is one of the few enclosures I could find that does not come with some kind of crappy (as in low-end) built-in RAID controller. When using in WHS, it is preferable to *not* use RAID and to let WHS do its folder duplication, so this is perfect and cheap for that purpose. Make sure your eSATA ports can handle a port multiplier or you will only see one drive or none.

Cons:

None so far. Documentation was a little weak, but not hard to figure out.

I did think it was broken at one point because its default setting is to power down if it does not detect a connection to your PC. When I switched from USB3 to eSATA, I had to tell it to change interfaces (button on front) or it thinks its not connected and powers down. You can also turn off this auto-sync power setting as well. Once I got that figured out, its been perfect!
