Easy install, great picture, User Interface and Remote clunky. Overall recommend!
Overall happy so far...functionality, features, setup. Recommending this product given the low cost. I'm a big "cut the cord' proponent and for the past 2 years have missed not having a device recording features given of national news or a late-night show. HULU can only do so much and with commercials! Now I have the ability to watch when I want and fast forward through commercials. Installed with 10 minutes and was quickly able to set a few recorded shows (daily, weekly, or future one time).Installation: You will need HDMI cable for going to TV, a cable "splitter", few Coax cables, 2 AA remote batteries, and a USB external recording device (had an old spare 2.5" 480GB). I have a new Samsung TV and really like the remote/ UI that came with it. My installation choice gives me both options (1) ability to keep my current OTA coax input to control with my TV channels, and (2) when I want to watch a recorded show, I just change the TV INPUT to another HDMI, and use the separate remote for the recorded shows. Benefit is also can record one show and watch live another! The key is to have the coax splitter, for one input to now two (going to TV and other to the Mediasonic).Pros: Flexibility on outputs. HDMI, and RGY to TV. Picture looks great (1080i)! You have many options to down step from 1080/720/480 if you need. Has Coax input and output (if you want this). Warranty of 2 years! Make sure you check other devices warranty you are considering. Of note, the paperwork that came with the unit says only 1 year, but Amazon listing shows 2 years manufacturer warranty.Cons: User Interface/ Remote. As others have said, the User Interface and remote is average to poor. It's functional. get the job down. Just lacking the new elegant user interface of today's main TV remotes.Good luck in your choice! Enjoy the OTA life..Save $$$. Beating cable guys, wand now watch when you want and fast forward through those commercials!!!

After extensively searching online at several sites for a digital HDTV converter, I decided on this unit as being my best option. I have a home theater projection system and needed a source for free over-the-air (OTA) local TV programing. The combination of great features on this unit at this price point really make it an unbeatable, no-brainer compared to what's available. This is the only decent unit I could find that had HDMI & RBG outputs, a PVR and a nice detailed on-screen program guide (EPG). I really only needed the HDMI out and the program guide, so getting the PVR with the timer to digitally record programs when needed, all in one unit was a nice bonus for sure. I'll be honest in that after reading some of the reviews, I did have some doubts and said a few prayers as I clicked on the "Submit Order" button. My conclusion was that many of the issues mentioned in the negative reviews were likely due to a software glitch, that was corrected with the latest V8 software version - which all the recent units (including mine) had. Whew! And knowing Amazoney's great return policy, I thought I'd be OK, if I did have any issues and had to do a return. After having the unit about 4-5 weeks, I must say that I am about 98% satisfied with my choice and the performance and features on this unit. My only minor complaint is that the clock can only be displayed in 24 hr. format - not a big deal, but having the choice to do the AM/PM would be nice. As with many remotes, this one has a only a very rare hiccup of not responding when a button is pressed.(Again, this has been ONLY a very rare occurrence and I have experienced this on several remotes over the years, as very few remotes are flawless). This is also one of the only few boxes that will connect and work with virtually any viewing set-up - whether you have an old analog tube TV, flat-panel HD monitor/TV or home theater HD projector; so you have maximum flexibility encase you upgrade or change your equipment. The picture and sound quality is excellent - right up there with any pay TV digital HD set-top box I have seen.
I have an attic antenna to receive my local OTA broadcasts and a small amplifier to boost the signal a bit to feed the signal to 6 rooms in my home. The unit connected and set-up quickly and easily. It auto-searched and found 46 local channels here in the Tampa Bay, FL area - so I was both very happy and surprised that there are so many free OTA channels and sub-channels available; many of which weren't on my previous satellite local channel offerings. The majority of these are broadcast in digital HD 720p or 1080i resolution - which is still a beautiful, sharp picture. So I now get a lot more than I had with satellite and all for FREE!! The electronic program guide (EPG) is a nice bonus and something most HDTVs don't even have. It also has very detailed program info when you press the INFO key twice - very nice to see the details on what's on before you decide what to watch. I recently dumped high cost satellite (over $100/month) and also added a refurbed Roku 2XD digital media player unit (see my review here on Amazon) with Netflix & Amazon Prime to stream movies and TV shows, to replace the majority of what I was getting on satellite. I am absolutely amazed at all the free, on-demand content (including music - like Pandora) available and what is also available on Netflix and Amazon Prime for about 1/5th the cost (about 80% less) of pay TV services like satellite and digital cable. So, I just couldn't justify spending so much coin to keep any pay-TV service anymore. And to this point I'm so very glad I did and I'm sure the content will continue to grow.
Anyway, I haven't used the PVR on this unit yet, so I can't comment on it just yet, but I will update my review when I do. I think you'll be quite pleased with the overall performance and versatility of this unit and its likely one of the best choices out there, especially at this price point. As with ALL electronics, I highly recommend reading through the set-up features & choices mentioned in the owner's manual to be sure to get the best and most performance for your particular set-up and situation. Enjoy life and I hope you found my review informative and helpful.

No problems so far. I do wish you could switch the time setting from 24hr to 12hr format. Also the T.V. guide that it populates for me states December 1st 2014. when I first plugged it in yesterday it stated the proper date and time after it did it's initial setup and stated the date as December 5th 2014. after about 4 or 5 hours it reverted to December 1st 2014 for all shows. It's stayed like that but hasn't affected the recording timer. The channel guide will populate a 12 hour guide for me. I get 9 Over The Air stations and they do come in clearer with this device compared to just with my antenna.

I'm still not sure how many recordings at once can be recorded though I do believe it's only 1. I'm using a 'Sandisk Cruzer Glide 16GB' formatted to 32FAT and for about 1 full hour of 720p recording it takes up around 6GB. For me it's trial and error. besides their directions are pretty lax. The on screen instructions gave me more insight 10 fold on what buttons to hit to do thing like delete recorded programs or to fast forward a scene I have recorded and so on.

I recommend reading the instructions though there's not much there so it helps give you a little insight. I haven't used the whole loop through yet to watch something while I record but I have recorded a show while watching a movie on my ROKU 3. I only have a single HDMI on the T.V. that I'm using this box on so I used the AVI cables that came with it. when you want to delete a recording though it doesn't tell you to hit the ok button twice after checking the file for deletion. I just assumed I would have to hit the ok button and I turned out right. besides that I haven't had any faults with this little guy yet. I actually have a insignia box for a little kitchen T.V. from best buy. Cost me $60.00 and this box for $40.00 (give or take a dollar) not only can record over the air shows but gives me a 12 hour channel guide. the insignia converter box lags and only gives you a channel guide of what's on and what's coming on next.

This HomeWorks box beats out the insignia just in lag not to mention a better channel line up of 11 and a half hours more or the fact that it is a recorder. I'm loving it for recording the local news, 48hrs, shark tank, 20/20, all the local OTA channels I like but am 2 lazy to turn my cable on to watch. I only pay 8 bux a month for my XFINITY T.V. and I only keep it for HBO otherwise I get my internet through Comcast and the deal was for 8 bux extra I got the HD receiver and HBO with their most limited cable channel package. why would I say no. Once HBO starts their streaming service with all their content some time in 2015 I will probably drop my XFINITY service because I might get the limited cable and HBO + stream pix for the 8 bux but that doesn't include all the fees and taxes on top of that and they just raised their rates on some services and equipment like my HD box by over 4 bux so add that all up and I'm paying close to 20 bux now anyway and the HBO was a 12 month promotion.

In the long run ide rather pay 20 bux to HBO and then stream their service on anything I want with out having a extra box on my tv sucking more electricity. Just my opinion but anyway this HomeWorx box was so worth every penny. I wish I knew about these a year ago. Darn u insignia converter box. I just might replace it with one of these for my kitchen T.V. especially because the kitchen T.V. has no AVI hookups nor a HDMI only a coax cable hook up.

      12-11-2014 UPDATE
So the box froze up on me last night and after using the power button to try and turn it off and then smashing all the other buttons on the remote It reset it self and worked fine since. I had a few programs to record but I believe on the final recording that was when the box froze in a sense. I still was able to watch the channel it was on just fine accept for the top left hand corner displayed a little box as to how long it had recorded the program. I could not change the channel though or get any buttons on the remote to work. Then after maybe 60 seconds of trying buttons the box reset it self.

Usually that record timer box will appear only when manually hitting the record button or if you have the T.V. turned on while a schedule recording starts to record and is easily removed by hitting the exit button but, the last recording was hours since and the T.V. was turned off during all recordings. Usually by hitting the exit button it will only remove the recorded time display and not interfere with the recording if you are watching the show that's being recorded but, like I said it was frozen and never has my record time laps box stayed on the screen like that before after a recording especially when the T.V. was turned off during the initial recording.

I removed my Sandisk Cruzer Glide 16GB thumb drive and tried to replace it with a Steelton Tech multi card reader/writer from Ollie's discounts store which cost me $2.99 and I used a "Sandisk Ultra PLUS 16GB Micro SD HC I" card and it works fine. Some times when I use the channel guide to mark multipul channels for recording it will state an improper date for example say today was June 20th and I wanted to record at 7pm today I mark it or try and it will state there is a conflict with the 3rd thing already in my record list and then set it to record on June 21st at 7pm on the same channel. More recently it has been having conflict when I try and record a show it will state conflict with item number 3 for example.

Item number 3 can be say Shark Tank on December 1st 2014 at 7pm to 8pm station ABC channel 3 and the 4th item I'm trying to record is say master chef on December 1st 8pm to 9pm station NBC channel 4. Now their should be no conflict so the work around I found is to remove the conflict recording which would be Shark Tank from being recorded in slot 3 at said time and replace the 3 recording with Master Chef then go back through the channel guide and re schedule Shark Tank to record at 7 to 8 pm and it will mark it as the 4th recording in my recording list with no conflict and record all 4 shows in my record list.

It's not perfect but the problems I'm discovering I'm also finding that their seem to be a simple work-around so that it still does what I want it to do. This box does take a little bit of patience's but for $40.00 and all of it's abilities I personally feel the small nuisances are justified. Also before I left to get to my schools main campus for class yesterday I wanted to try and quickly what COPS while brushing my teeth, which I recorded at 3AM, while I was sleeping. So I unplugged the Steelton Tec multi card reader/writer and plugged it into my laptop and ran the HDMI cable from my T.V. into my laptop. I tried opening the file of 'Cops' on the, SD micro card, with windows media player with no luck so then I tried to open it with a program called NERO and it played just fine. If you want to go that route and need a player for your computer if you don't go to a pc store or say even best buy to pick up software like NERO then I would say try the web site CNET.com. It's the only place I really trust for my media downloads if I'm trying to be cautious with my device.

For free you can download windows codec packs or even download a free stand alone media player that will work. I won't get into any of that really but if needed just go to CNET.com on the upper right side their is a tab called downloads click on that then in the new window there will be green tabs in the upper middle stating Windows, Mac, iOS, Android. Depending on your devices operating system choose the proper tab. I have windows so I click on windows, then type in the search bar in the upper right side, one of these 'all media player', 'all video player', 'windows media player codec pack'. If you need help just let me know and I'll do my best to find you a safe media converter to play the video files from your HomeWorx box.

I've been using this tuner for the past 18 months with a HD antenna (2-bay Channel Master).
      Works great.
I fixed the antenna on a mast and mounted it on my chimney. Remember "height is King" to get the best signal.
I aimed the antenna towards between Buffalo and Toronto and on a good day I can get over 50 channels!
Even on a bad day I still get 20 with the major channels.
The Interface is easy to navigate. PVR simple as cake. Just plug in an external Hard drive to the USB Port, choose channel and press record.

Reviewed in Canada on March 11, 2015
I've been looking for a good OTA PVR for the last year or so. I tried Tablo TV and was dismayed by the poor quality of the software which kept crashing. I wanted to get a DVR+ from Channel Master but the price is a bit prohibitive. Then I found this little gem for under $60 CAD. For the price, this is a great little gadget you can hook up easily to your HD TV and your indoor or outdoor TV antenna. I connected a 1 terabyte Western digital passport hard drive and have been recording my programs for the last 2 days. The software is not the most user friendly but once you familiarize yourself with the controls, it is quite easy to manage your programs and recordings. at 1080i, a one hour program takes up around 4 to 6 gigs of space. The recordings are saved using a very simple naming convention: Channel name and date (i.e.: CHRO20150309.mp4). You can rename the files if you prefer.
The only inconvenience I found is that it does not have a dual tuner and hence you cannot watch TV while watching another program. You cannot access your recordings while recording a program. If there is a way to simultaneously watch and record, I haven’t been able to find it yet. As far as TV onscreen guides goes, you're stuck with whatever the channel feeds you through the Electronic program guide system. Usually, you can get up to 3 days of programing displayed. The tuner captured all my local OTA channels as expected and works fine. To conclude, for the price, this is a great little product.

5.0 out of 5 stars My personal PVR system

This box not only allows you to watch your local digital air broadcast signals, you can plug in any USB drive, and PVR anything and everything. I have it set to record all my regular favourites, and all I have to do is watch when I have time. That's it.
Simple plug and play set up, and away you go. You can use either the boxes tuner, or use your TV's tuner, depending how you choose to configure it. The only thing I would change is to have the USB plug on the rear of the box, rather than the front. But, if you think you would be plugging and unplugging regularly, the front USB connector is preferable.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not sure on this one, likely going back

Setting up today. It scanned and found one channel when every TV in my house scans 25 channels. Will try other outlets. The one channel was nice and clear.
Main issue is the HDMI does not seem to output, tried two separate hdmi cables and two different TVs. The component output (y/r/w) works fine, but that is not getting me HD output.
Still googling for a solution, whether firmware Update or other, but I think it is going back.
Other note, the usb based media player feels like an afterthought. Just underpowered and not ready for prime time. It does play the video I have, probably the best I can say is it feels like great technology from 2010.
Have not tried the pvr so can’t comment.
