Anthony Cerulli is Professor of South Asian Studies at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. His primary field of research is the critical study of medicine, religion, and the body, especially in South Asia, and much of his work contributes to the medical and health humanities. Many of his projects and publications, including his 2022 book, THE PRACTICE OF TEXTS, combine ethnography, history, and philology to explain how and why people in south India do things with texts to heal and promote well-being. Anthony is also a photographer, whose exhibits and publications explore links between art-making, history, and ethnography (his photography Twitter handle is @manuscriptistan).
Cerulli's research has been supported by the Guggenheim Foundation, NEH, Library of Congress (Asian Division), Institut d’études avancées de Paris, European Institutes for Advanced Studies, ACLS, and Fulbright-Hays.
Cerulli has a PhD from the University of Chicago; an MA from Yale University; and a BA from Loyola University Chicago. He has been Directeur d’études invité at the École des hautes études en sciences sociales in Paris, and he has been the editor of INDIA REVIEW since 2009.
