I believe the author did an excellent job of describing the clothing worn by Europeans between the 13th to 15th Centuries. More illustrations of the progression of medieval styles of dress, and more authentic illustrations from primary sources rather than the modern black and white drawings used, might have been more more helpful. Still, I'd say that this small, reasonably priced book did a very good job of laying out a nice groundwork to build upon. Costumes of peasants, clergy, gentry, nobility and royals are included in this small volume. Hairstyles, headdresses, embroidery and quite a bit of jewelry and embellishment worn with the costumes of the times, as well as a few other items of interest to this subject, are also included. The author does provides basic patterns to recreate much of the clothing depicted and described, although I am fairly sure these patterns weren't drawn from the actual patterns of the times for constructing such costumes. They will get you started however.
"Medieval Costume in England and France" is a good place to begin the research needed to create the costumes of these times. I would advise anyone serious about getting into medieval costuming to build a library that includes books with better details and illustrations than provided in Mary G. Houston's book. BUT her book is a great starting point, especially at it's very affordable price. All in All, I give it my highest recommendation. A+++++

Editorial Reviews
Review
Medieval Costumes In England And France is a carefully researched volume offering costume aficionados and enthusiasts of the medieval period a meticulously detailed and splendidly illustrated study of clothing worn in the Middle Ages. Lucidly written accounts of the style and construction of costumes worn in the 13th, 14th and 15th centuries are followed by accurate descriptions and illustrations of royal raiment, elaborate ecclesiastical dress and vestments, academic and legal robes, as well as civilian dress for all classes. Mary Houston is a noted costume historian who brings her special expertise to discussions of accessories and such related subjects as ornaments, jewelry, armor, textiles, embroidery and hair-dressing. The 350 black & white line illustrations are taken from contemporary books, manuscripts, pictorial and sculptural representations. Medieval Costumes In England And France provides superbly documented information that is both clearly and succinctly presented in the text. Medieval Costumes In England And France is a "must have" reference for theatrical costume designers, members of organizations like "The Society for Creative Anachronism", science fiction & fantasy conventions, Madrigal performances, or even halloween parties and costume balls! -- Midwest Book Review

This is a good overview of medieval costume. There are certainly more detailed books out there, but I like this for the overview it gives. The drawings are recreations from other sources - sculptures, stained glass windows, and other artwork of the period. The text gives detailed descriptions of the garments, though not a whole lot on how they are constructed. For authentic construction details, I highly recommend "Medieval Tailor's Assistant" by Sarah Thursfield.

Houston's book seems to be an excellent overview of the costume of the late medieval period. While it doesn't delve much into the actual construction of the clothing (i.e. patterns, stitching, etc.), it's quite good at giving a solid visual representation of the changes that occurred during these centuries, and as such I think it's a great starting point for study.
As other reviewers have mentioned, the illustrations in here are redrawn from primary sources, so serious students of costuming will want to look at the primary sources whenever possible. Most will also need to seek out other sources to find better information on the construction of the clothing as well. But even so, this book is so inexpensively priced that I can't find too much to quibble about. Anyone, especially beginners, can buy it as an introduction and then move on to more detailed sources later.

Good for research

This is an excellent reference on medieval costume. There is lots of useful information and illuatrations on all types of costume from this period. This book is about the use of costume and styles rather than how to make it. If you're looking for a book on how to construcvt costume this won't be of much help[ but as a research tool it is very good. A useful addition to my wifes library on costume design.

A bit too technical, really - great if you want to MAKE any of these clothes, as there are diagrams that are almost like pattern pieces.

Gorgeous small-ish book packed with info on clothes and costume in many social layers. Very interesting with the section about ecclesiastical costume, I never saw that in any other book about this kind of topic!
