About the Author

Caitlin Weeks is a Certified Nutrition Consultant who works with clients and writes about holistic health and Paleo nutrition for her popular health blog, Grass Fed Girl. Caitlin lives with her husband, Nabil, and is based in San Francisco and Nashville, TN. 
Nabil Boumrar is a professional chef at a five-star international hotel in downtown San Francisco. He graduated with honors from an established culinary program where he was trained by the best chefs in Northern California. He was born in Algiers, Algeria, and in 2004 came to the United States, where he soon discovered his passion for cooking. 
Diane Sanfilippo is a Certified Nutrition Consultant who specializes in blood sugar regulation and digestive health, and she teaches nutrition seminars nationwide. She is The New York Times bestselling author of Practical Paleo: A Customized Approach to Health and a Whole-Foods Lifestyle, The 21-Day Sugar Detox, and The 21-Day Sugar Detox Cookbook. The husband and wife team of Nabil Boumrar and Caitlin Weeks, along with Dianne Sanfilippo have created a masterpiece in the stunningly beautiful Mediterranean Paleo Cooking. Loaded with color photos, how-to steps and tips plus over 150 fresh coastal recipes, this book will have your family asking for more.

The Mediterranean diet was all the rage just a few short years ago, and many health experts tout its benefits. Combine that with the added benefits of eating a grain-free, whole foods ancestral diet and you have a winning combination.

I began reading the acknowledgments and the intro and was soon riveted to the story of how a young chef from Algiers and a nutritionist/fitness coach from Nashville met and married. Even more interesting is the story of how they embraced their interest in ancestral nutrition with Nabil’s homeland cuisine. Mediterranean Paleo Cooking takes one on an historic and culinary adventure of the countries that border the Mediterranean Sea. Following the brief history of Mediterranean cuisine are some health steps practiced by Mediterranean peoples and from which we all can benefit. To name a few: living a slower-paced life, eating seasonally, strong family connections, less reliance on technology and nose-to-tail eating (meaning, eat the entire animal). There’s more information on the Paleo diet, the fusion between Paleo and Mediterranean recipes and foods, a primer on how to stock your own Paleo Mediterranean kitchen, how to use the book and meal plans. The recipes are categorized into groups: Breakfast, Appetizers, Soups, Pizza and Pasta (yes!), Poultry, Red Meat, Seafood, Odd Bits (think offal), Vegetable Sides, Desserts and The basics (those wonderful seasonings and dipping sauces).

Every now and then, a cookbook comes along that changes everything you think you know about its particular niche. It presents something in a totally new way or it opens doors of a cuisine to a new audience. Mediterranean Paleo Cooking by popular blogger Caitlin Weeks, her chef husband Nabil Boumrar, and Diane Sanfilippo does both. Think you know what “Paleo” food tastes like? Think the healthy “mediterranean diet” is heavy on the grains and light on protein? Wait until you see this book!

Let’s cut to the chase… You need to add this cookbook to your bookshelf, especially if you use diet to manage a digestive or autoimmune condition like I do. But really, this cookbook is great for anyone who likes tasty food!

Why? It makes you want to eat paleo. Gorgeous photography and the recipes are absolutely delicious. I’ve had my review copy for two weeks and it is already stained with food drippings from use! In addition to the Zesty Paleo Crab Cakes I’m sharing in this post, I’ve made the accompanying Garlic Aioli, the Mediterranean Chicken Liver Pâté, and Nacera’s Lemon Ginger Chicken Tagine. Every single one is a winner and I have a bunch more marked to try.

It is also very flexible for people following healing diets. 112 of the recipes are paleo autoimmune protocol (AIP) – friendly as is or with provided modifications. An even larger number (159) are GAPS and SCD legal! FODMAPs are also clearly labeled and modifications are indicated. What I love best is that all of this is provided on the recipe page – you don’t have to flip to an appendix in the back or in some outside source.

Delicious, Beautiful, & User-friendly - Mediterranean Paleo Cooking goes beyond any cookbook I've seen so far. Authored by a professional chef and two wildly popular holistic nutritionists, this book delivers much more than just recipes. First of all, what strikes me is the beauty of the book - it's gorgeous! As you begin your journey through it, you learn the sweet story of how the book came together and then, in very practical, easy to digest language — all about Paleo nutrition and how it can support your health. As a nutritionist myself, I so appreciate the reference to autoimmune and special gut healing protocols such as GAPS and SCD. Besides the delicious recipes, 2 of which I've already successfully tested on my family and a party of teenage boys — I love the chef and nutrition notes and, as the family cook in a house full of allergies — I totally appreciate the recipe allergen index. As you go through the book, it's like your are traveling throughout the Mediterranean, immersing yourself in the traditional dishes of North Africa, the Middle Eastern countries, Italy and all the other countries of that expansive region. There are flavors and dishes that are wildly different than any other Paleo cookbook out there. I can't wait to share more dishes with my family and friends and to recommend this book to everyone I know. Well done, Chef Nabil, Caitlin, & Diane!

I can say without a doubt that this is an amazing cookbook. Here are three things I love about it:

1. It is beautiful! The pictures, the layout, the borders, the font--everything works together to make a stunning cookbook. When I flip through this book, I want to make (and eat) everything! The richness of the colors is especially lovely.

2. As someone who loves to eat, and loves to cook, ethnic food, I am so happy to see a cookbook that incorporates real foods, traditional cooking methods, and the flavors of the Mediterranean. There is no other Paleo cookbook like this one! I can't wait to start making all the tagines, and I'm especially excited to make the pasta...and the desserts...and the falafel.

3. There are modifications for just about every nutritional challenge or limitation. Want to eat low carb? Need to follow an autoimmune protocol? Can't eat eggs or nuts? There are notes and substitutions for all of these issues and more, which makes this a great resource for anyone who loves Mediterranean food but often runs into problems because of his/her allergies, illnesses, or dietary goals.

Mediterranean Paleo Cooking is a purchase you won't regret! And it would make a lovely gift for anyone who loves to cook...and eat.
