Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreS The star of Meeow and the Big Box and Meeow and the Little Chairs (both Boxer Bks., 2009) returns. In this installment, Meeow and his four perky animal pals browse through a cupboard of pots, pans, and cooking utensils, and each one removes an item. With a wooden spoon, frying pan, fork, mixing bowls, lids, and measuring cups, the playmates form a band. This story reads aloud well. A few vocabulary words for colors are integrated into the text. Helvetica typeface is clear, large, and bold. At times the text is printed opposite the artwork against a solid background more often it appears with the illustrations. Created from hand-painted line shapes that were digitized, assembled, and colored, the bouncy artwork rests upon pastel blue-and-white checkerboard patterned backgrounds. The last spread portrays Meeow and company in band uniforms playing traditional, rather than homemade, musical instruments. After hearing this story, children will want to experiment with kitchen wares to create their own music. Purchase if the earlier Meeow books are popular. Lynn K. What can I say? I have a six year old son with high functioning autism. He adores this book. We first got it (and the other two Meeow books) from the local library. He loved them so much that we decided to order them. It's nice when he finds books that he loves since we have had some difficulty encouraging him to read. If you have a child with autism, you may want to give these a try. They seem to have the right balance of sensory (not going into sensory overload) and flow of righting.

There are so many classic books for young children that we all have, and yes, they are great, but there are also so many wonderful books that are relatively unknown. This is one of those gems that I am so happy to have found! We received "Meeow and the little chairs" from our pediatrician through the "Raising Readers" program here in Maine. I'm not sure if other states have this program, but it is really neat. We were sent home from the hospital when my son was born with a canvas tote full of books and get one at every well child check up until he is five. Amazing. Anyway, while we have received lots of wonderful books, the Meeow book is the favorite of both my son and I, and what's best is that there are more, yay!!. The bold illustrations of 5 well know animals are eye catching and fun to look at, and the characters are simple and lovable. Baa, Moo, Woof, Quack, and of course Meeow, their fearless and clever leader, represent the essential child in all of us. In each of these books they explore a creative play experience that all children (and adults) can relate to. It unfolds as a child's first mystery story as the characters assemble everyday objects from around the house....."what can they be doing????" In this particular story each animal picks a couple kitchen tools of some kind, and in the end they make a marching band. The text is short and sweet but manages to inject humor and intrigue within this simple dialogue. I particularly like that the last page depicts them as if they are playing real instruments in a real parade, as I think this is exactly what is going on in a child's head when they are engaged in this style of imaginary play. We only have two of the Meeow books so far, but I am just waiting for the next holiday so I can buy the rest.Read more ›

My 14-month old daughter loves Meeow. We had picked up a book at the library, and it soon became her favorite. I love that each book has a story line, the pictures are quite detailed, and they aren't mind-numbingly boring to read.

Meeow is a kitchen kitty cat. She's all dressed up in her yellow apron and is sporting a red scarf. It's cooking time and all her friends have come over to play and help her out. Wolf, Moo, Baa and Quack are raring to go and, of course, have their dandy aprons on too. Meeow starts poking around in the cupboard looking through her pots `n pans to get ready to bake a cake. Everyone else has been bitten by the curiosity bug and want to take a look. The pots and pans are stacked this way and that and finding just what Meeow needs will be fun. She scratches her chin, rolls her eyes and puts on her thinking cap.

She starts a little kitty dance and smiles as she pulls out a green colander and a wooden spoon. Woof grabs an orange frying pan and a yellow fork. Cooking can be lots of fun, but you have to pick just the right tools to do the job. Moo has found "three mixing bowls--red, green and purple. Wobble, wobble " She's balancing them on her shoulder. Watch out The cupboard is almost bare as the animals prepare to cook. Baa has some orange lids and silly Quack has a measuring cup on his head and a whisk in his hand. Are they going to do some serious cooking or are they cooking up something altogether different to do?

This is an adorable whimsical kitty cat story that will delight your preschooler. The childlike, vibrant artwork is quite charming and adds a lot to the story. The characters each have a sound alike name and googly eyes that will appeal to small children. Every little one likes to "help" cook and will be excited to see some of their favorite animals fast at work. The cute little twist at the end of the story makes the recipe for this story scrumdiddlyumptious and may become one of those favorite stories that will keep your child turning the pages faster than you can read them!

This is a great book for toddlers. The illustrations are also very pleasing and easy on the eye for toddlers. With such bold colours, it enabled me to elaborate on the images to my toddler. i.e. explaining the colours and the animals. The story itself is great for a toddler as its simple to understand as it uses simple language and has a great selection of verbs. I also am impressed with the fact that the animals are named by the sounds that they make, which always makes this book a pleasure to read.

The Meeow books are really great simple stories about Meeow and his friends. In this story Meeow and his friends use items from the kitchen to start a marching band.

My 14 month old loves, loves, loves the Meeow books. And Mom and Dad don't mind them too much either. I think Meeow and the pots and pans is the best of the three that are currently available. Meeow and the little chairs comes in second and Meeow and the big box is my least favorite. The Meeow books are the first one my little guy grabs when he sees the stack of books. I would highly recommend this series. I'm looking forward to the newest installment.
