Making friends can be scary and can be hard to talk about. Good thing Meesha is here to share her story, reassuring young readers to talk about their feelings and emotions. Meesha Makes Friends is a welcome addition to the Big Bright Feelings series, opening the door to discussions on sensitive and emotional topics by creating a safe story environment for discussion.
Meesha loves making things but she struggles with making friends because she doesn’t know what to do or say in social situations. The illustration style is so effective in conveying Meesha’s experience through pops of color contrasting grey backgrounds and my 5 year old loved spotting how it changed throughout. I think this is a wonderful book for children to read and talk about—whether it provides a mirror to their own experiences of feeling out of place in social situations or whether it provides a window into someone else’s feelings so they can be more compassionate and patient.
