Meet Addy: An American Girl (The American Girls Collection Book 1) Paperback – September 1, 1993

4.7 4.7 out of 5 stars 211 ratings

Addy Walker's family is planning a dangerous escape
from slavery in the summer of 1864. But before they can make the escape, the worst happens--Master Stevens decides to sell some of his slaves, including Poppa and Addy's brother, Sam. Addy and Momma take the terrible risk of escaping by themselves, hoping that the family eventually will be together again in Philadelphia. Set during America's own struggle over slavery, the Civil War, Addy's story is one of great courage and love--love of family and love of freedom.

The story of Ruby Bridges is well written and my 6year old grandson was so interested! I feel it is definitely a reality story to begin discussions relating to our nation’s history - the good, the bad and the ugly! Prayerfully, truth will set our next generation free! I strongly suggest an informed adult share in the reading and discussion of Ruby’s amazing story!

Addy is a smart girl with a clever brother and parents who dream of freedom. They plan to escape from slavery to freedom but it falls apart. Leaving behind the people they love is the hardest thing Addy has ever done, but she and Mama are brave. This is a very hard hitting American girl book that shows how horrible slavery was. It's very graphic and pulls no punches

It's a dramatic story for elementary age children. It's a nimble tale that nonetheless hits all the hard notes of what slavery was, and more importantly, what it means to be a slave. Highly recommended.

I grew up reading American Girl books and now my daughter, who is 6, is reading this and she really loves it! She is a strong reader, so I'm not sure that all 1st graders would be able to read this but it is inspiring for all those who are able =)

First read this as a child, in elementary school! I became an Addy Addict! I had the books, paper dolls, and all the magazines! She was the first black american girl added to the collection! Really awesome book, I advise any woman with daughters to buy this.

I bought this for my 9yr old 4th grader who was given this as a book report assignment. He really enjoyed reading it and getting to know the story of Addy. Now this is a little boy who is on his 4th Harry Potter book, so I know this book had to be interesting in order for him to really like it and hold his attention.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brave Addy
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on June 9, 2015
Addy's stories are some of my favorite books ever from American Girl. Addy and her family are slaves and are planning to escape to freedom. However before they can do this Addy's father and brother Sam are sold to a different family, Addy and her mother then have to leave her baby sster Ester behind and make the dangerous escape for freedom. Addy is so brave, kind and loving. This is one of the reasons Addy is one of my favorite american girls. This book is so sad but so brilliant at the same time if you have never read Addy's stories do it as they are some of the best!

amusant et ludique, peut être lu par une petite fille de 10-12 ans : le vocabulaire est assez simple. C'est plus amusant que les livres d'école pour apprendre l'anglais !!!...surtout quand on la poupée qui va avec !!!
