Review

This is a book you MUST go in blind. Just know that it will push your boundaries both emotionally and mentally. It isn't a typical love story BUT it is indeed a story of love, sacrifice and redemption. Of salvation through forgiveness. By and far my favorite book this year! Phenomenal! ~ Heidi Tieman-McLennan

Meet Me in the Dark is not a traditional romance and it's not for the faint of heart. It's violent, gritty, dark and if you're sensitive to these types of reads, I wouldn't recommend it to you. However, if you're like me and love a dark and suspenseful romance with a strong heroine and a hero you love to hate and hate to love, this is one I would highly recommend. ~ Christy Baldwin BBU

I truly don't know how Huss does it! She takes these extremely complex characters, and she is able to make me loathe them one minute, and love them the next... ~Lexxie (un)Conventional Bookviews

JA's writing and storytelling is impeccable and brilliant. ~ Ms.Meesh

Merc is a jerk. Plain and simple. He kills. Sydney is a HOT MESS. Unsaveable. But together?? Freaking Hussie perfection. ~ Mrs. Justin Davis

My most anticipated book of the year!! ~ Di- Twisted Sisters' Book Reviews

From the Author

I'm just warning you, this book is not for everyone. It's dark. I'm not joking. And not in a 321 kind of way, either. ;) #iwasdisturbedjustwritingit Read the sample, it only gets darker from there. But it will give you a good idea of what to expect. Next up is Sasha's book which should release soon. Maybe as early as 5-20-15 (my dream date). But then again, maybe not.

An assassin haunted by a job that went wrong seeks resolution eight years later.

This book is very different from what I normally like to read. I don't usually enjoy dark suspense. But Merc and Sydney's story captured my imagination and took me on a ride that I won't soon forget.

The plot is intricate, but I'll outline the basics: Merc was hired to breach a militia stronghold and rescue his boss's sixteen-year-old daughter. For rather complicated reasons, he ends up saving someone else and leaving Sydney behind with the maniac who's holding her. This decision comes back to haunt Merc when he wants to get out of the killing business. The maniac is a lingering threat and Merc is determined to find him. Sydney is Merc's only lead, but the information is locked away in her rather damaged mind. Merc kidnaps her and will do anything...ANYTHING...to get her to remember. Only things aren't as clear cut as he expects, and the line between predator and prey blur big time.

I'd read several reviews of MEET ME IN THE DARK before clicking the "buy" button. Words like insanity, rape, violence, hatred, vengeance came up again and again. All of those descriptors are appropriate for various aspects of the book. And, yet, it's still an incredibly romantic story. For all of Merc's "I'll kill her...She's dead..." declarations, I never once believed him. His actions, even at his worst, are the opposite of someone who's planning murder. The physical violence (and there's plenty of it) is mostly reactionary--Sydney gives as good as she gets. Emotional violence is another story. Merc excels at playing head games. But Sydney's been the victim of such games for years, so even when Merc thinks he's breaking her, he's not.

I am a reader who loves dark books. I love story lines that you aren’t supposed to love… the messed up ones. The books where you can’t tell if the hero has any good at all, but they eventually win you over. Books that make your heart beat fast and keep you on edge while reading. Where there are twists and turns at every corner. This book had all that and more.

If you’ve read Slack or the Dirty Dark and Deadly series, you’ve heard Merc’s name mentioned. You may have caught a glimpse of him here or there, but you don’t know the real Merric Case.

Merc made a choice eight years ago. He had a job to do, orders to follow. Things didn’t quite go according to plan. Now he’s back to fix what he needs to fix. For that, he needs Sydney. He needs in her head. To figure out what secrets she holds. And Merric Case will do whatever necessary to get the information he needs. Anything. He’s not above using any means necessary to break Sydney.

Merc is one of those characters that you love to hate and hate to love. I was very conflicted about my feelings for him in the first half of the book… if you love him that first 50% or so, there might be something wrong with you. I don’t think Merc is the most likable character. But the more I understood him, the more I saw him come out of that violent and messed up haze and see the more of him, I did start to fall for him. I always think it’s more satisfying to end up loving a hero that starts out as the bad guy. It’s a challenge. Merc is damaged, he’s rough around the edges and his heart is hard. But a few things can soften him.

Sydney… what can I even say about her? She might seem a little on the weak side, or compliant at times, but don’t let that fool you. She is strong. She is determined.

It is about dang time we learn about the mysterious killer, Merc.
Why am I saying this? Well Merc is mentioned a time or two in other books by JA Huss, however, this book is a STANDALONE. You do not have to read the others to understand this one.

I have been anticipating a book about Merc ever since JA mentioned it on social media. (You should totally join her fan group Shrike Bikes on Facebook btw) He is such fascinating character and has been all along. She teased the group that his book would be dark, but that he has redeeming qualities and boy does he.

I'm not one for re-hashing the plot or synopsis on my reviews so if you want that read up above.

I will say though that this book completely surpassed my expectations. JA never fails to surprise me with twists and turns, but this was a book I didn't want to put down because I had to know what happened and I had to know right then. I ended up hiding in my closet (that I was supposed to be cleaning) in order to finish all alone and in peace. No joke. I couldn't stop reading.

I felt the characters in this book (despite one of them being a known psychotic killer) were extremely relatable. I felt their feelings, their pain, confusion, brief moments of happiness and peace. But on top of that I felt my own confusion because no one writes a twisted tale quite like JA Huss does. Just when you think you have it figured out you don't. I don't even bother trying to make assumptions anymore. I'm always wrong. And that is just the way I like it, when reading a book anyway. As always Ms Huss, I bow down to you and your mastermind. You are a genius.

This is a a stand-alone from JA.
