Annie Murray was born in Berkshire and read English at St John's College, Oxford. Her first 'Birmingham' novel, Birmingham Rose, hit The Times bestseller list when it was published in 1995. She has subsequently written many other successful novels, including The Bells of Bournville Green, sequel to the bestselling Chocolate Girls, Sisters of Gold and Black Country Orphan. Annie has four children and lives just south of Oxford. She also writes as Abi Oliver.

I've just finished Annie's latest novel, Meet Me Under the Clock. Annie has done her usual impeccable research. The book set in Birmingham, during WW 2. It follows the lives of an ordinary working class family, and their next door neighbour. The story tells of the jobs the women had to take during this period, such as working on the railways while the men folk were abroad fighting the war. It tells of the joys and heartaches experienced by the women waiting anxiously to hear news of their husbands, boyfriends. All in all, a thorughly enjoyable read.
I found myself thinking of the characters in the book during the daytime, (I read late at night) to me this is always a sign of a first class read.

An interesting story based on two neighbouring families living in Birmingham during WWII. However it was not much different from all the other novels about family life during the last war. Both families being held together by their mothers who in turn supported each other through their troubles.

The Whitehouse family had two daughters viz Audrey and Sylvia who both did their bit for the war effort, Audrey joining the WAAF and Sylvia becoming a porter on the railways. The latter occupation was different and interesting. However although I enjoyed the storyline I do feel that Audrey's character was not in keeping with that period of history and without giving anything away I don't think she would have openly behaved as she did latterly.

Kitty was a welcome addition to the story as there are many Kittys around nowadays it was good to see how willing the family was to support her initially.

If you just want an interesting WWII novel then read this book. If you read and look indepth at the characters then perhaps it is not for you.

Firstly let me say I've only given 4 stars because I'm only halfway through reading this book. I found the beginning a little confusing, but that may be because I started reading it at night when I was tired and I found myself having to read several paragraphs twice. I'm not going to say what happens in the story like some other reviewers do, because I think that spoils it for others who are considering buying the book. What I will say is now I'm further into the story I'm enjoying what I'm reading and unlike many books of this type/era there isn't a lot of detail about the war, so I don't feel as though I'm having a history lesson when I'm reading it. So far it's a nice book.

I have read all Annie's books and she is still my favourite author. I love that she sets her stories in Birmingham as there is always something in her books that reflects on my life or that of my family. Audrey in the story was at RAF Cardington and my dad did his basic training there during World War II. Also my mum was a WAF. The other sister in the story worked on the railway and I had several family members who worked on the railway all during the war. I thought that the way that Audrey's struggles with her relationships was dealt with very well, and that this made the story very different from the normal wartime books. This would have been something that would have very much not been talked about in normal conversation at the time.

Would other reviewers please note that "Brummies" use the word "Mom" rather than Mum or Mam.
