No need to pay more. The old edition was discontinued by the author as the self-published work got a publisher. The new edition has lots of the worksheets that readers requested. You can feel good more often by stimulating the brain chemicals that cause happiness. This book shows how. It would be nice if your happy chemicals just flowed all the time, but that's not how they work. The evolved to promote survival by rewarding you with a good feeling when you meet a survival need. The problem is that your brain defines survival in a quirky way. It cares about the survival of your genes, and it relies on wiring it built in youth. That’s why we do quirky things to stimulate our happy chemicals, despite our best intentions. You can build new neural pathways to turn on your dopamine, serotonin, endorphin, and oxytocin in new ways. Dopamine is the “I can do it!” feeling. Serotonin is the pleasure of getting respect. Endorphin is a euphoria that masks physical pain. Oxytocin is the security of social trust. These impulses are easy to see in animals because they don’t mask them with words. Your happy chemicals don’t tell you in words why they turn on and off. They pass quickly, and you have to do more to get more. We hate it when our happy chemicals dip, which is why we rush to trigger more with whatever worked before. Bad habits result. You can free yourself of bad habits by accepting your natural ups and downs. You can enjoy more ups by building new pathways to your happy chemicals. This book shows how you can do that in 45 days.

About the Author

Loretta Graziano Breuning, PhD is founder of the Inner Mammal Institute, which helps people get the best from their mammal brain. As Professor of Management at California State University, and as a mom, she learned to question the presumption that happiness is our natural default state. She learned from studying animals that unhappiness is part of our survival system, and happiness is a learned skill. She retired from teaching to build alternatives to the disease-based view of the brain. Dr. Breuning wrote three books on making peace with your inner mammal, and writes the “Your Neurochemical Self” blog on PsychologyToday.com. She is a Docent at the Oakland Zoo, where she gives tours on mammalian social behavior. And she marvels each day at the overlap between a primatologists field notes and the lyrics to a country western song. Loretta spent a year in Africa as a United Nations Volunteer after graduating from Cornell University and Tufts. Great book, ridiculous title

Despite the hokey title, the book is quite good. I knew most of the science she goes over, but I had never thought about the implications in the way that she does. She talks about what causes our brains to release feel-good chemicals, and how we can cause that in healthy ways. There are four different "happy chemicals" that are easily distinguished from each other. Once you're more aware of how they work in your own body, you're more aware of your own motivations for some of the stupid things you do as well as alternatives to your standard behaviors. It's well worth the read for expanding how you think about different things that make you happy and also many of the things that make you feel bad.
She does repeat herself a lot, and I wonder if the chapters were taken from her blog where she would have to repeat herself a bit with each post. It could use some editing down.

Is oxytocin, serotonin, endorphin, dopamine, or cortisol your life drug of choice? Perhaps one of those is your Achilles heel, holding you back from a happier, healthier life.

MYHC is a landmark book that has implications for marketers as well as for ALL of us who have various guilty pleasures. And while many of those addictions are more socially acceptable (food overindulgence) than others (alcoholism), they are none the less troublesome and painful.

And if you are a marketer studying this book in order to craft more effective copywriting, recognize that this knowledge can be used either for the forces of evil or good. Beware if using this information for manipulation when you have shoddy products or services that will not fulfill their promises. That will work in the short term but will never develop long term fans of yours. Choose wisely.

It provides a clear understanding of how our behavioural patterns start to originate, and what course of action could we take if we want to start consciously shaping our habits. I think it's one of the best books about brain. It's very simple for understanding. It's not a solution, it has only short regular advices like eat well, sleep well, exercise, have friends. But in comparison with other books it's nice and easy to read.

This is a very good book. It allowed me to learn a lot about why I think the way I do about many things. It also teaches you how habits "stick" and if you stay with the process, why they must eventually take hold. I have more of a reason to be patient when learning any new skill.
