Editorial Reviews

"What's the band's name?" "Megafaun." "What's the album called?" "Megafaun."

The trail discovered by 2008's Bury The Square, blazed by 2009's Gather, Form & Fly, and tended by 2010's Heretofore has run into a wide and rushing river. The band we know as Megafaun, born alongside Bon Iver in the ashes that rose from DeYarmond Edison (Brad Cook, Joe Westerlund, and Phil Cook's former band with Justin Vernon), has woven years of writing, touring, and living into a new sonic language. Critically-praised and publicly-loved for their ability to speak in the many tongues of American musical history.

Megafaun currently exists as a triavia question (Who used to play with Justin Venrnon of Bon Iver?), but with this release should take their own turn in the spotlight. This is as solid a set of tunes as I've heard this year, featuring great songs and inventive playing. From the Dead-like opener REAL SLOW, to the stratuspheric harmonics of the eight plus minute rocker GET RIGHT, to the gentle YOU ARE THE LIGHT, this CD is filled with highlights. Fans of Bon Iver, Wilco, the Grateful Dead and the Fleet Foxes should be directed to acquire this at once.

This fourth album by North Carolina band Megafaun comes unfortunately adorned with one of the boring album covers ever constructed appearing like some sort of logo for a piece of software or a sinister global multinational. A shame really since the music on this album is a splendid smorgasbord of freak folk Americana from a band who emerged from the ashes of DeYarmond Edison a band that once contained in its ranks Justin Vernon aka Bon Iver. When the latter parted ways and went up to a log cabin in Wisconsin to pour his heart out in the classic "Emma, forever ago" the remaining members namely brothers Brad Cook (bass, guitar) and Phil Cook (keyboards) along with Joe Westerlund (percussion) formed Megafaun. Clearly relationships with Vernon remain largely cordial and he appears on the superb eight minute plus "Get Right" which this reviewer can happily report is as good as anything on 2011s "Bon Iver" being a sweet melodic anthem which actually packs a nice soft rock punch. Overall this is a very intricate and distinctive album and for every Bon Iver (ish) heartbreak ballad such as the truly lovely "State/Meant" there are equally trippy Grateful Dead workouts such as "Real Slow" which echoes "He's Gone" from the Dead's "Europe 72" set. Absolute standouts include the heartbreak piano ballad "Hope you will know" which deserves to be lauded with praise and spoken of in hushed tones by children in our villages. It is a lush and lovely construct and ghostly backing vocals from Heather Mcentire seal the deal. In sharp contrast it is followed by the quirky Mothers of Invention style instrumental jazz of "Isadora" a song packed with trombone, brass and woodwinds demonstrating in turn what an electric stew this bands can cook up.Read more ›

Just ... come on. Megafaun are a primal force, true artists crafting true beauty. Nothing extra, nothing missing. Rewards multiple listens, and grows with you. That's how you know it's a classic.

Check out their other albums, too. You won't be disappointed.
