(In my opinion, still the COOLEST 70's action figure...BAR NONE).
As I got into my 30's,I would have beautiful dreams of being in some forgotten department store and seeing all the MEGO WGSH's for sale.I buy as many as I can grab in my trembling hands and as I feel myself bathing in exasperated MEGO glory and good fortune... they are ripped from my clutches as I wake and realize..IT'S ONLY A DREAM...sigh!
My dreams became a REALITY with the release of Benjamin Holcomb's WORLD'S GREATEST TOYS book,
a DEVASTATING 256 page,hardback,high quality color printed masterpiece.Benjamin Holcomb's sincerity and
love for his subject matter is clearly evident in EVERY aspect, from the meticulous photography and layout,
to the detailed research done w past MEGO execs and employees,to the concise info on packaging variations that has never been as clearly defined in any existing reference/picture guide on MEGO WGSH.
This book also has rarities abound!!There are figures in here you never got a chance to see unless you were really lucky as a kid, like:Large S Superman,Removable Mask Robin,Broken Circle Suit Spiderman,Cloth Belt Riddler, and also a beautiful array of rare cards like:Iron Man,Green Goblin,The Lizard,Catwoman all BEAUTIFULLY photographed front and back.Actual size photos, uber closeups SUPER DETAIL EVERYWHERE YOU LOOK!!It's the next best thing to owning one of the sweetest WGSH collections IN THE WORLD!(The rare specimens pictured in this book are amassed from MEGO supercollectors. With some of the LOOSE pieces trading for upwards of $1000 - $2000 a piece, you will likely never again get a chance to see them in this much detail and photographic glory..That alone's worth the price of admission!!)
If you are a MEGO fanatic like me or just a 70's toy/nostalgia fan,RUN!!...don't walk to get this book,YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED!!
Some guides in the past have offered glimpses of unproduced prototypes, but mostly the product information has been sparse or incomplete, and the photography substandard. This guide wasn't pulled from shots of items found at collector shows - Each figure released under the WGSH banner has been lovingly photographed in bright studio settings, at multiple profiles and with extreme detail. Every accessory is shown large, from angles you never see elsewhere. Each card, box and case packaging variation is noted and shown... Big. The webbed fingered Aquaman production figure photographed is possibly the only one to exist, and was a complete surprise.
Following the historical retrospective theme, the book details every WGSH 8" figure as it was chronologically released, with each variation in color, stitch, mold design and fabric choice in order of issue so you can clearly witness the progression of MEGO product development as the line went on. Even as familiar as I am with the line, there were a few surprises to be found.
If you're looking for the others of many lines released by Mego before their demise, sadly they're not here. As the title says, this is all about the World's Greatest Super Heroes. Were the author to release a book covering any of the other Mego properties (Monsters, Knights, etc) I would gladly add to the library. Initially I found the retail price point to be higher than most comparable books I may have been used to. Upon holding it though, it becomes clear that those other books really aren't comparable at all, and the price is right for the work put in. This guide most reminded me of the best Japanese Vinyl toy books, and is really a glossy, hard-covered love-letter to the toys inside.
engrossed in this book. The scope of information this book covers in mind-boggling. From good and bad selling figures (you'd be surprised by a few) to how the figures were distributed from the Mego warehouse. For the serious collector every detail you could want about the packaging (as much a classic as the figures themselves) is here.
The only regret, it does not cover Mego Star Trek, Planet of the Apes, and so forth. Maybe another book should be written.... Hint..
I completely recommend this book, if you are a novice to avid collector.
