However, no matter how attractive, fun and educational a toy may be, it's worthless if you can't use it. This puzzle (as well as the similar construction themed one) both fell apart when we opened them. And not in the way that a puzzle should.
The puzzle is constructed of lightweight laminate. However, there's a wide layer of ineffective glue between some layers. The puzzle feels more like balsa wood than the usual sturdy construction to which we're accustomed.
When our little guy unwrapped it this Christmas, he immediately wanted to play with it. So, I removed the shrink wrap and began to separate the pieces. Immediately, the laminated layers on the pieces (specifically the edges of the lumpy parts) began to separate and break off. Mostly the bottom and topmost layers.
Again, I usually find Melissa and Doug toys to be of high quality. Judging by the reviews here, others haven't had the same problem. I'm hoping that this is simply one small manufacturing batch that went amiss and not a new trend. However, I can only review based on my experience. So, although this puzzle gets high marks for fun, attractiveness and educational value, I can't give it more than 2 stars because of the construction and safety issues (small pieces of broken laminate that could pose a choking hazard).
The puzzle pieces are wood and there is a wood tray/border the puzzle fits into. When we first got the puzzle I pulled out sections at a time, increasing the size of the section each time. By the end of a couple of days, he was doing the puzzle without assistance. The animals are lovely and identifiable. The number of different colored animals makes this puzzle easier than the Melissa and Doug 24 piece dinosaur puzzle (which we also have but he struggles with). The pieces have become much easier to pull apart and fit together as the puzzle gets loved.
The pieces have stood up to tons of use, stepping on them, throwing them, biting them, peeing on them (twice...oh the joys of potty training boys). I love that I can scatter the pieces and get some time to myself to cook dinner or have an adult conversation. Once he conquers the dinosaur puzzle I think we'll try out free form puzzles.

From a design standpoint, this puzzle is not the best design. Although it LOOKS great at a glance, if you take the puzzle pieces out, some of the colors look too 'same-ish' and it's surprisingly harder than it looks for little ones to distinguish say, a giraffe piece from a lion piece. However, it could serve as a good 2nd or 3rd puzzle to have in the 24 piece size, once the child has already gotten really good at 24 piece puzzles, because this one offers the extra challenge of having to carefully distinguish the pieces. I wouldn't recommend it as the first 24-piece puzzle for a young child though. We have some of the other Melissa & Doug designs and they are better designed from that standpoint, in my opinion.
