With this beginner pattern block set, they have a hit!
This is a set of brightly-colored, very well made wooden boards with puzzle pieces that help children with coordination, planning, and motor skill development. Each board is a figure (kit, fish, bird) that is completed with wooden shapes. The kit contains 5 board which are double sided, giving children a total of 10 pattern boards to play with.
The boards are made of wood and are super sturdy and sized perfectly for toddler hands to easily pick up, move around, and play with. The little puzzle pieces are also ideally sized for toddlers. There are enough pieces to allow for two children to play at the same time.
One note-- this is definitely an activity toy that little ones may need grown-up help with. The first several times we used this, I sat down with my child and led the activity so he could understand that the pieces were for building shapes, not just throwing around the room. Also-- some of the puzzle pieces are small, and will require your supervision and judgement for safety.
Please note that the puzzles that do not say "beginner" have much smaller shapes that would be a choking hazard for younger children.
Beyond the obvious shape, color & object learning, this toy is just plain fun! I'm a fan of wooden toys; the less toxic plastic in my world the better.
My preschooler son enjoys this one a great deal & will get it out on his own, dumping it all over the floor. The puzzles are two-sided & along with the shape pieces, stored in it's own compartmented box. I wish it came with a lid, either sliding or flap, but not having a lid does make it easier for my son to see what's inside.
The only downside, is the many pieces to pick up, but you can make it a fun game with your child by asking him or her to pick up first by color, then by shape, etc.
There are points of course on the angular pieces, but with some supervision no one should get hurt. Hey, your child can get hurt walking...so far, no one's gotten poked, pricked or banged except when my son throws the pieces around, as he does with everything.
A good puzzle set for the toddler in your life.
UPDATE...almost 2 years on & the paint has held up, the wood has held up, all in all so far fairly durable. My son still plays with the puzzles & has fun!
Remember how the shapes fit back into the holes! We had to jimmy rig the triangle pieces to make them fit again. I'm very OCD so that was my biggest annoyance.
Educational - we talk about colors, what the name of the shapes are, and the finished product - about the animals, where they lived, spelling of the words, etc.
My son already knows his shapes and colors, but using this we're able to go a little bit further and create a solid discussion. He gets very excited and wants to complete the whole set super fast, so it's fun and educational. Love it!!
