Top Customer Reviews
Please click the helpful button if you thought my review was worthwhile.
1.) I had no idea that the end of the trailer had such a pointy edge. The trailer edge must be pointy so that the cars can drive up onto the trailer. It's okay for older kids as long as they don't fight over it or hit someone with it. Those top corners (by the yellow car) could do some damage!
2.) The top cars won't stay on the movable part if you actually move it (to bring it up over the bottom part). The kids open the trailer, drive the bottom cars in, then put the movable part overhead, and then fly the top cars onto it. Once the older kids discovered it didn't work just like the trucks on the road, they lost interest in the trailer. (Our smaller kids might still want to play with it, but they can't because they would be hurt by falling on that pointy edge--they fall a lot at that age. The company recommends 3 years and up, probably due to younger ones falling a lot.)
We've had the tractor/trailer set about 6 months and the kids ignore it, including the cars, which aren't as realistic as matchbox cars. I don't think I'll buy Melissa & Doug products again.
The cars fall off the back when pushing it around. My toddler solves this by putting B. Squeeze Blocks on the back end or simply turning the trailer over and putting two cars in the wells created.
The truck cannot roll because the wheel wells were glued together poorly and one wheel sticks.
The peg to hold the trailer on is SO long! As someone with a permanent scar on my face from falling on one of those split apart egg counting toys from the 70/80s, I fear my son putting out an eye on this toy if he falls on it just right.
Overall, the truck is full of rough edges and nicks; even painted over, they still cause the truck to look beat up. It looks just slapped together or like someone hated their job when they made it.
Needless to say, I am disappointed, my husband is disappointed, and my toddler is not nearly so enamored with it as he was before since we watch him carefully when he's playing with it. As it was a gift, there unfortunately is no way to return it; all I can hope for is an exchange, and I don't even really want that, honestly.
I bought the Janod Multi Zoo since, and it is solid feeling, there are no nicks, its paint doesn't look a mess, the peg is shorter; it seems a quality product for the price. I am very disappointed with this Melissa & Doug car carrier and I wish we had gotten the Janod Multi Cars Truck instead ( http://www.amazon.com/Janod-J05597-Multi-Cars-Truck/dp/B003HGHH5A/ref=sr_1_13?s=toys-and-games&ie=UTF8&qid=1385137969&sr=1-13 ).
On the plus side, the cars are about the same size as IKEA trains and the Maxim trains, so they get some use on the train tracks he has. Silver linings...
