Had to wait until post Christmas to write this review. Every year for Christmas I would put pick up sticks in my sons' stockings. They mentioned it earlier this year and recalled the happy times we had with them.

I looked for months. Malls and stores. To no avail. A friend reccommended Amazon.com. Wow and I thought you only sold books! So I shall shop here for things other then books. For sure!

This year my youngest suggested we give stockings to each other. What a concept. Upon taking it out of the stocking,my children each said, "Wow! Pick up sticks!! Come on let's play Mom!" What a time we had. Laughed the whole time we played. We were not concerned with winning, but sharing the time. And remembering. My children are 40 and 47.

I reccommend this to anyone of any age. And the construction was hand made and hand painted. It looked antique. And the case is hangable and it is all wood too. Totaly portable. What a Christmas. Great gift for teens to Grannies;-)

Classic Game But Product Quality FAIL

The set is pretty good. The quality is not an "Heirloom-Quality Game" as printed on the package. It will be lucky for the set to last a year with children. The sticks has poor quality coloring. I can barely see any difference between the red or purple stain used to color the sticks. The wood used is a very soft sap wood that is very dark in color. Paint or stains bleed in the wood and changes the color of the stain.

The game itself is an all-time classic, which is why I am giving it three stars. Melissa & Doug are known for high quality toys for children. This time they really dropped the ball on quality control. They should have had an American Manufacturer produce this. Then they would have had a perfect product!

I was looking for an additional set of these pick-up sticks to use at our family reunion. I had an old set of Mikado sticks from when our kids were young. I wanted another set so more people could play at the same time. They are not the same quality as our old ones - but what is these days. They are good however and our grandkids of all ages really got into some fun competition with the sticks.

I bought the pick-up sticks for my 2 grandsons, ages 6 & 10, to play with when they visit our home.
The boys really enjoy the simplicity but the younger felt a bit frustrated at first. He then began imitating his older brother and me, their grandfather. The younger's dexterity has improved and he really enjoys "beating" his older brother and grandpa.
My wife and I decided NOT to let grandkids take the game when they leave our home each time. We've played many, many times and the memories it brings back are wonderfully warm.
The box is made to look antique-like. It's REAL wood! The sticks are also made of wood and painted to look old. Plastic pick-up sticks are cheap and bend easily. The wooden sticks don't.
Would I recommend this to others? YES, YES, YES!

this is a childhood game that i remembered playing with cheap plastic sticks in a paper tube... i wanted to get this to play with friends, and it is terrific quality item. i dont like the design of the box as much as i thought it would be kind of vintage-y, it is okay with the exception of the slideout top which looks kind of like it was written in chalk. i like the muted tones of the sticks and they feel nice and solid in your hands.
overall i would recommend this, i buy many melissa and doug products and love them!

Comes in a cute wooden box with a sliding lid. The lid is a little loose and falls off the box if you lean it in that direction at all. I would never use it god decorate as it is advertised. Sticks look good and they are supposed to look aged, but they're really almost dingy looking. If you are shopping for a kid, I would buy a different set as these are not really cheerful at all - they look like they may have been sitting in your grandpa's basement for 40 years. But, for who I bought them for, they did the job. very sturdy and I liked the game instructions and variations that came with the set.

We got this for our ten year old as a stocking stuffer. I remember this being an easier game but then ours was plastic and this was wooden. I would say this is a great family style game and even though it was challenging I would recommend it. My husband and I enjoyed it too. I wouldn't suggest this for younger kids, I don't think the patience would be there. Also, their are dull points on the end of the sticks.
