I was so excited to see this Wooden Cutting Fruit Crate because my older daughter and niece have the old Cutting Food Box but since we are gluten free the fruit seemed like a nice addition for the little kids. Unfortunately it is not nearly the same quality. The pieces don't seem to fit together as snuggly and the velcro isn't as strong so it is more as if the fruit falls apart instead of the cutting sensation the first set has. Also the wooden food itself doesn't feel as substantial/heavy and it doesn't come in a box with a lid like the older set. I don't know if the quality of the Cutting food box has gone down as well or if it is just this set, but I am pretty disappointed.

After 2 months, I can say that there are good things and bad things about this toy. The crate packaging the toy came in is very nice and we kept it for "play store" purposes. The fruit pieces are brightly colored and the paint is nice and shiny. The velcro on the orange, kiwi, lemon, pear, and strawberry pieces works very well, even after 2 months. The velcro pieces inbetween the melon and banana pieces are set too deep into the toy and they don't stick together well (I noticed this right out of the package). My 23 month old daughters like practicing cutting with the large play wooden knife, although they have a smaller, gray plastic knife that they seem to prefer to use (it just seems a bit easier for them to wield). One of my daughters found a piece of stray ice on the floor and put it in a bowl to stir around with a banana piece. The water and wood were not in contact for long (maybe 20 seconds?) but it was long enough to cause the yellow paint on the banana to bubble and flake. I thought the paint would be a little better adhered to the wood but I guess not. Be fair warned!

We have a lot of Melissa and Doug toys. The cutting food set is my daughter's favorite toy so I bought this set to go along with it. We just brought it home from store and I am so disappointed! Some of the velcro pieces are sunken into the wooden holes and so they barely "stick" together. The cantelope holds together by just a few strings. One of the velcro pieces on the orange is a piece from the end or side of a roll? It only has velcro on half of the piece, the rest is just material. We're so used to such high quality from Melissa and Doug that it really surprises me! I'll take it back and try again. I hope this isn't a reflection on a decrease in quality from our favorite toy brand.

I love Melissa and Doug toys and I have had a great experience once before with customer service. My 2 year old loves this toy, but right from the start the paint started chipping off the fruit. It bubbles up and then just comes off. My 10 month old puts everything in his mouth and it worries me. I would send it back and I'm sure the company would replace it, but I am doubtful that it would be any different since there's no reason why it happened in the first place. My sister said her kids have the same set and it happened to their fruit too. My kids love the toy so I'm still letting them play with it under supervision. I'm just disappointed that this is not up to the usual quality of Melissa & Doug toys.

My 2-year-old loves these. We got her a play kitchen for Xmas and have been stocking it with healthy play food so these were a perfect fit. I love that it has a canteloupe slice. She loves canteloupe and every other set out there has watermelon. The paint on the canteloupe is not perfect like it is in the picture but it's fine. It's also weird how the banana slices but I guess if you were going to slice a banana with the peel still on that's probably how you'd do it! They could have maybe skipped the banana and put in an apple instead... that would have made more sense and you could even have it slice into quarters instead of halves.

Melissa & Doug is one of our favorite companies to buy toys from as all of our toys from them have held up and engage my children in play. This fruit cutting set has been no exception.

My son received this set for Christmas when he was about 18 months old. At first, he enjoyed naming the fruits and talking about the different colors of the fruits. He was delighted when he learned that the fruit could be "cut" with a knife. Initially, he needed assistance holding the knife and pressing through the velcro to cut. Gradually, he began to be able to hold the knife himself and do the cutting himself as well. It was awesome to actually see his fine motor skills grow by playing with this toy. He also went from not being able to put the fruit back together to being able to do it on his own. The fruits with more than two pieces can sometimes be tricky to put back together as you have to line up the right velcro sides, so, it is a great learning process.

So far, the toy has held up with routine play. There are no chips on the paint and I can tell this toy will last for years to come as well. Another great toy from Melissa & Doug!

I really like this idea. Makes my baby feel like such a big boy to chop up fruit like mommy!
It's a little advanced for him, he is pretty smart, but only 18 months, but with mommys help he really enjoys cutting it and using a 'knife'. Only reason it's hard for him is lining the fruit up when the Velcro sticks, and angling the knife so it fits the slit it creates. So better once kid can handle a slightly more advanced puzzle, but still good to train and enjoyable for younger kids with a little help.

Only reason I give it a 4 star instead of 5 is that the cantaloupe is really hard to put back together. I absolutely have to help on that as it only fits one way for all 4 pieces. Slightly frustrating. Overall, really well made, cute container, and my son loves cutting up his fruit with mommy. =)
