Satisfying slicing sounds
Ideally suited for stocking a play kitchen or shopping cart, this cutting fruit set combines hands-on fun and unique learning with creative play. The seven included fruits (pear, orange, melon, kiwi, strawberry, banana, and lemon) can be cut up into 17 hand-painted wooden pieces using the included wooden knife, then neatly tucked away in the sturdy storage crate. Kids can’t resist the realistic 'crunch' sound when the fruit is sliced!
Independent play, imagination, and introduction to math concepts
In addition to teaching fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination, this set encourages imaginative and independent play--and even introduces the concept of fractions. A child can use the wooden knife to cut up the fruit and count all the pieces, then you can talk together about cutting the pear, orange, strawberry, lemon, and kiwi in half; the banana in thirds; and the melon in fourths.

It's a little advanced for him, he is pretty smart, but only 18 months, but with mommys help he really enjoys cutting it and using a 'knife'. Only reason it's hard for him is lining the fruit up when the Velcro sticks, and angling the knife so it fits the slit it creates. So better once kid can handle a slightly more advanced puzzle, but still good to train and enjoyable for younger kids with a little help.
Only reason I give it a 4 star instead of 5 is that the cantaloupe is really hard to put back together. I absolutely have to help on that as it only fits one way for all 4 pieces. Slightly frustrating. Overall, really well made, cute container, and my son loves cutting up his fruit with mommy. =)
As usual, this Melissa & Doug product is well made and durable. He has been playing with this for at least a couple of months and the Velcro does not seem like it is letting up. It's solid wood, so if you drop it on your toe it hurts.
