With all the high-tech electronic toys available for kids today, it would seem that the basics would be long forgotten. However, often the classic toys are the ones children want to play with the most. This classic block set includes 50 solid wood 1-inch-square blocks that are ideal for stacking or building. Two sides of each block feature carved letters or numbers in bright primary colors for teaching the alphabet or counting during play. The other four sides feature stamped letters, numbers, or pictures for additional practice in identification. This block set will most likely become the most used toy in the playroom. --Cristina Vaamonde

Although the recommended age is 2 years, I confirmed with the manufacturer that this age recommendation is for the child's interest/educational sake and not safety related. My ten month old loved the blocks and immediately bagan examining each one, as well as tasting them as everything goes in her month at this age. Within minutes, I noticed she had something in her mouth that she was chewing on. The blocks are made from such soft wood that with a little saliva she was able to scrape wood (and ink) off with her teeth! The ink on the side of the block was already smearing with a little saliva, and as I said she was able to scrape off the wood-- enough to chew on! Needless to say, the toy was taken away from her (much to her dismay). I was very disappointed with the quality of this classic styled old fashioned toy.

These blocks are classic and very sturdy. Of the 50 in the set, 38 are letter blocks. There is a different letter on both sides: the "A" block has "N" on the bottom, etc. Of the 38 there are
5 A/N blocks
4 B/O blocks
2 C/P blocks
2 D/Q blocks
5 E/R blocks
3 F/S blocks
3 G/T blocks
2 H/U blocks
4 I/V blocks
2 J/W blocks
2 K/X blocks
2 L/Y blocks
and 2 M/Z blocks.
The other 12 are blocks bearing numbers and the +, -, and = symbols. Happy spelling/building!

These blocks were very helpful to me. I was under the mistaken assumption that Melissa and Doug was a high quality toy company, and these blocks cleared that right up. The company produces the same crappy, low quality, made-in-China toys that you can get at dollar stores for a fraction the price, they just have the right combination of marketing and packaging to hoodwink people into thinking their wares are decent.

The blocks weren't great to start with. The paint was smudged on many of them, but the real stunner was that the blocks were in many cases poorly cut and not sanded/finished properly. This meant lots of rough, splintery edges. The paint also comes off really easily, even just from scratching. Might as well let your kid play with scrap wood from a construction site.

Don't be fooled. If you want high quality blocks, order from one of the many companies out there that offer legitimately good ones. Otherwise buy a cheap off-brand and save a lot compared to the swindlers at Doug and Melissa.

I just received the blocks and although they are nice they are very, very small- only about 1 inch square. I can't believe how tiny they are!!! I didn't even know they made blocks that small, lol.

If you care about safety and quality, SKIP this product. In fact, since blocks are such a core product for little kids, it makes me leary of purchasing ANYTHING from this company which makes a BIG DEAL on its web site about product safety and compliance and blah blah blah.

Want the story? Fine, you asked for it. Got it delivered. First off, before even opening the box, I can see through the plastic shell they came in, and see the inside of the the shell is COVERED in tiny specks of paint that have separated from the blocks. And looking closely at the blocks they have numerous small paint defects. These are unused, unopened blocks, and I already know with 100% certainty they would be destined to go in my kid's mouth anyway. NOT GOOD, people. No, we are NOT off to a good start. I really don't care about Melissa and Doug's safety assurances at this point — no lead in your paint? Goooood for you. I’m STILL not going to FEED my kid paint. At this point: decision has been made to return.

My ire aroused, I turn back to the Amazon reviews to figure out what we missed the first time around. And someone is complaining that the pictures on the block do not correspond with the letters. We examine the blocks through the plastic shell and find this is largely true. The J is paired with something that looks like a "jet" but the O is paired with a... Cow? The Car is paired with the number 1. The Dog is paired with the letter A. Like what? Come again?

Friends, let’s take a step back here. What is the point of blocks? The philosophical point of them, I mean. Are they supposed to be at least nominally educational in nature?

I got these blocks quite a while ago, proud of myself for finding these "good old blocks". They SUCK!! The paint was peeling off the first time it got a little saliva on it! The wood itself is very soft and easily destroyed and splintery!! Stay away from the Old Fashion Type Blocks!!!!!

These blocks are pretty cheap, not that surprising considering the price but I tend to think of Melissa and Doug being nicer quality.
I'm including a picture of what a few of them look like right out of the box. I was disappointed about how they appeared, but my kids (ages 1 and 2) are enjoying them.

Although these blocks are durable and have the traditional die-cut letters, I am very disappointed in the oversight of what I perceive to be an elementary necessity. The problem with this blocks is that although they have letters and pictures on each block, is that the pictures do not correspond to the letter on the block. I think that it is important for use for years to come to not only have a basic fun and building value, but to be able to foster language development when the time comes. I have a problem with the letter "P" block having a picture of a bee on it, how am I supposed to explain that when the question arises? If you are only going to be using these blocks for a young child and not keep them to teach them as they age, then they serve that purpose, but if you are like me and want them for longevity, then pass on this set.
