Sooo....I just acquired at a garage sale the vintage Tomy Fashion Plates that we all used as children, and I must say, our memories aren't so accurate. Oh perhaps I should say that our memories are blurred by childhood nostalgia! The vintage Tomy set is actually a little *harder* to get a clear picture because the picture ridges aren't as high as the Melissa and Doug set. Also, regarding durability, the plastic actually seems thinner and less sturdy on the Tomy set in comparisons to the Melissa and Doug set. Nonetheless, I was excited to get the Tomy set because it was the EXACT one that I had as a kid, but just an FYI for all those who are remembering the vintage set as the Golden Era of toys... :)
This Fashion Design Kit by Melissa & Doug is really great -- I had one of the Tomy ones when I was a little girl, and really **I** couldn't wait to play with this thing! However, I was a little hesitant with all the bad reviews...I was worried about: 1) The odd paper size (Because, frankly, it would be a pain in the rear to custom-cut endless pieces of paper for my Little Fashion Designer); 2) The smudgy-ness that everyone was talking about with the crayon; 3) The durability.
1) Odd Paper Size
- I got a tablet of drawing paper at the dollar store. The paper is 9x12, and I cut each sheet in half and it is the PERFECT size.
- This paper I got at the dollar store is sort of a natural color, thin, and a little more grainy than standard computer paper (which is usually really smooth and sometimes has a glossy finish) -- it almost looks recycled, if you know what I mean. We have not had one smudgy work of art. The paper stays in place and the "rougher" texture helps prevent smudges.Read more ›
This is super cheap quality. The lid only closes (on the top) when you have the drawer pushed in. The plates themselves are not exactly even, they are a bit warped and don't lay flat. The drawing area is too small for a regular sheet of paper, but slightly larger than half a sheet of paper. You cut paper in half to use half sheets and they slide around a bit in the top area. Since the plates are a bit warped, you can't get a good rubbing of the pictures. (One skirt and top is polka dotted and not even half the dots will transfer to the paper.) The top is difficult to open. It also easily pops off on the opposite side that should not be opening. The eyes usually don't transfer to the rubbing either.
The colored pencils it comes with are pretty poor quality and not good color choices. (Brown, indigo, light pink, and yellow.) They don't have very much pigment in them and you're coloring on top of a rubbing, so you need much more vivid pencils than it comes with.
Within about 20 minutes of use, my 6 year old had already found the duct tape and taped the lid down. She likes the product and said other girls would like it too, just use duct tape.
This "Fashion Design" kit is no exception. It comes with several different plates for mix-and-match (not as many as I remember my kit having, but my daughter thinks there are plenty!) as well as four colored pencils and a crayon rubbing tool.
The toy itself is durable, and very large. It's much larger than I expected. It's got a handle on top and everything fits into the toy when designing is over- the bottom of the toy is a drawer that slides out and holds all the plates as well as the drawing tools.
The negatives are the lack of variety of plates, and the fact the bottom of the toy is smooth plastic, which means that it slides around on a hard surface, such as a kitchen table or a desk when doing the rubbings. We remedied that by putting a little bit of foam tape underneath. The kit doesn't come with paper, either, which is sort of a negative since it requires a weird size of paper (smaller than a standard sheet of paper, large than scrap paper) and the plate holder won't close if the paper in it is larger than the frame. So you'll have to hand cut paper to the right size, and if your daughter is anything like mine, she'll go through A LOT of paper with this thing.
Also, using a crayon as a rubbing tool is sort of a drag- it makes muddy and blurry images. I remember my Fashion Plates having a piece of graphite or something in the rubbing tool. But maybe there are some health issues with that.Read more ›

We love it. The only reason I give it four stars is because the drawer gets stuck and it is very hard for my daughter to pull out by herself.Published 5 days ago by Chad Pugh
