A week later I show up to his birthday party with the now wrapped cleaning supplies in hand. Guys, I felt like I was walking into the lion's den where tons of judgey parents would see that I bought my nephew a mop, broom and duster. The shame!!! It came time to open presents and my nephew opens the big box, exposing that instead of dressing like a cowboy or spaceman or soldier, he would instead be playing janitor. The parents remained silent but their eyes spoke loud and clear...
And then the weirdest thing happened. My nephew took out the broom, squealed with joy and immediately began furiously sweeping in a fit of baby happiness. One by one, kids dropped the Nerf guns and toy cars to pick up the duster and mop. WTF is happening. From pauper to prince, I strutted like a peacock, basking in the glow of having "the best gift at the party".
Not going to lie, I can't believe this is a thing or that kids want to play with it but my nephew seemed ecstatic and that's all I was going for so 5 stars!
1) The mop is just rope that is able to unravel at the ends. The more it's used, the more it unravels. I can see that there are places on some of the ropes where they aren't continuous all the way up to where it connects into the head, so once they unravel to that point, there will be little rope pieces falling off of it. They should have either tied the ends in knots or melted/bound them in some other way to prevent the unraveling.
2) The duster actually picks up dust. As "helpful" as that may be, there's no real way to clean it, so I have a feeling we'll have a dusty, gross toy duster someday that we're basically unable to get entirely clean. It would have been better had it been designed with a fiber that's unable to pick up much dust.
Overall, we're happy, but I see those couple things as design flaws that would vastly improve the product, were they modified.
There are some quality issues, though, that I was surprised to find in a Melissa & Doug product. The plastic red dustbin is supposed to snap on to the broom but doesn't fit. Also, you have to screw the red base to the wooden central support rod, but this only came with a screw and no hardware (thankfully we had a hexagonal wrench lying around from another product that fit). The screw is also about twice as long as it needs to be, and I found that as it was almost in place it was very difficult to get into the wood, like the channel in the rod was angled. The colored cords that hang the broom/mop/etc from the stand are all different lengths and tied in really sloppy knots - one was tied so short that the mop wouldn't fit on the stand so I redid it. Lastly, the red base was packaged with a bunch of sticky tape stuck to it that took off some of the paint.
I do like the product, and would recommend it as a nice kids cleaning/helper toy, but I have come to expect such high quality from Melissa & Doug products that I felt I should mention the quality issues with this one.
firstly, the paint appears cheaper than is normally seen on m&d products. secondly, the pegs are all crooked and misaligned, which allows for a difficult time hanging some objects. thirdly, the handle for the brush is completely different, thus allowing for the dustpan to simply not attach to the brush. lastly, the brush itself had broken and bent bristles.
the package appeared "normal", however upon further inspection, it seems to have been taped together. typically, the box itself is quite sturdy and well constructed. quite disappointed, as this was a birthday/christmas present that we feel we paid wayyy too much for compared to the quality.
