Fun, creative piece, but annoying to put together.

We got this as a Santa gift for our 2-, 5- and 8-year-old daughters. They loved it and played with it a ton in the week following Christmas. Very sturdy and well designed - it now resides in our basement and still gets some play. But it was a huge pain to assemble the night before Christmas. I'd recommend, but with the warning that it took a long time to put together (about an hour). I didn't read the description closely enough and thought it was the color-in kind, but the outside is fully colored already. My kid enjoyed coloring the inside, so not a huge deal. Fun, creative piece, but annoying to put together.

Made for a cardboard castle but I do feel that it took way longer then it should have to put together. My husband spent 2 hours on Christmas setting this up with not very detailed instructions. I also feel it's a bit over priced for what you get, but my kids enjoy it and I would purchase again.

The kids really have a ball with this and all its relatives. We started out with the space ship, and then we had to have the castle. Eventually they will wear it out, but they played with it enough to be worth the money. They can color on it as well as play in it and around it. The box is a little bulky, but not too heavy, and it fit in the back seat of my car.

My household is home to quite a few Melissa & Doug toys and we know the brand for thoughtful, high-quality kids toys. We own everything from simple shapes puzzles like Melissa & Doug Farm Animals Sound Puzzle to fun make-believe toys like the Melissa & Doug Let's Play House Dust! Sweep! Mop! 6-Piece Pretend Play Set. I think my experience with these other M&D toys makes reviewing the Medieval Castle Indoor Playhouse rather more difficult.

This toy, or rather, "indoor playhouse" is really just an intricate cardboard box. Make no mistake, my kids aren't above playing with a good cardboard box. The difference is when our old Amazon shipping boxes get beat up we can just put them in our bin for recycling. Not sure how I'll feel about tossing *this* cardboard box in the bin. That's something parents really need to consider when shopping for this toy. Are you willing to part with a toy that can be reduced to rubble in a matter of minutes that costs over forty-USD (at the time this review was written)?

We've had the Medieval Castle setup in our basement for about two weeks and though I've taken great pains to remind my kids that the castle isn't quite as sturdy as a real castle I can already see some good signs of wear. The sliding door, in particular, has worn poorly. The door is held in the open position by two strips of folded cardboard. This works about as well as you'd expect for a few days but has totally failed to be able to hold the door up at all now.

The fate of this castle really just resides in my kids (2.5 and 4.5) now. Kids will be kids and I know that when they have friends over to play things will inevitably turn for the worse (for the castle).

Assembly is another area I'll touch on. To put it succinctly, if you're not a fan of toys requiring assembly skip this castle! There's at least an hour of folding cardboard and tucking little strips and flaps of cardboard through slits and slots. The instructions are pretty good, not quite Ikea quality diagrams with the ability to translate intricate steps into easy to understand diagrams. Some folds will have you looking at the instruction booklet several times. But the net result comes together pretty well and looks impressive!

I'll finish by saying that my two boys adore this castle! They love crawling in and out of the castle gate and building other structures with our toys leading to the castle. So hence the high rating. For sheer enjoyment from the kids, this toy is worth it. Use your judgment and experience with your kids to determine if this is worth purchasing or skipping.
