First of all, this toy was horribly made. The jingle sticks in particular were rough on the handles. Were these sanded down at all? I seriously doubt they were. I seriously feared splinters from them. I mean, wood chips were all over in the box when we opened it.
I know this is a toy, but the point should still be to foster a love of music in kids that play with it. That will not happen with these instruments. It is impossible to make any kind of real music with these. The xylophone is made of wood which is so soft that my child dented it the first day, and all the "notes" it plays sound the same. The notes on the recorder are the same way. They are just screeches with no distinction between the notes. The rest of the instruments are just random wooden things meant for banging, so you really can't mess them up.
There are some good toy instruments out there, but I really wouldn't want someone to think they had found them with this toy. This is definitely not worth even half as much as this costs.
First off, the good news; most of the percussion works well. The clacker clacks, the tone blocks produce a tone, the jingle sticks do in fact jingle, and one can be quite rhythmic with the rhythm sticks. The triangle is probably the highest quality instrument in the whole set, and makes a nice clear ring when struck.
Now for the bad news. The harmonica is difficult to play and poorly tuned, the build quality of the xylophone is low and it takes a lot of coaxing to produce notes, the kazoo is ok but pales in comparison to the cheap plastic ones for ease of play and tonal quality, and that's even more true for the recorder, and the castanets are not manufactured in such a way that they can be played like actual castanets.
This product fell very short of expectations and I would not recommend it, even for a 3 year old. Just buy separate instruments, either online or preferably at your local music store.
This is high quality stuff, as all Melissa and Doug items I have bought have been.
My kids love this set and play with it all the time.
My only complaint would be the xylophone. The bars are wooden and so the sound is dull as it's a small, table top xylophone that doesn't have resonators and they are attached to tightly to the frame. But they do not all sound the same as I read in some reviews, you can hear that the shorter bars play higher notes, it is just a very dull sounding xylophone. If your main concern is a xylophone, I suggest you look elsewhere for one with metal bars for children or one with wooden bars on a stand, attached with cord and with resonators. Keep in mind, these sets are geared for preschoolers, they are made to be safe and durable, not for quality of sound.
The rest of the instruments are great.
We use our set every day. We turn on some worship/praise music and have a blast singing, dancing and playing our instruments. The kids love it and it's a great way to introduce kids to the concept of steady beat, tempo, and auditory perception.
I'm very pleased with this purchase and plan on buy more instruments to add to our collection soon.
