The puzzle pieces are not hand-painted; they have paper stickers glued over unfinished wooden cut-outs. My daughter has had this puzzle for two weeks and the stickers are already wearing off. I used to be a fan of Melissa & Doug, but I will not be buying any of their products in the future if they are now producing this kind of cheap junk.

I want to say first that I LOVE Melissa and Doug products. They are very durable and grow with my son developmentally. My problem with this product is that what I received was very clearly NOT a Melissa and Doug puzzle. It very much resembled one until I picked up the puzzle pieces and discovered that they were nothing more than raw wood cut-outs w/ stickers on top! There was not one drop of paint on the pieces! The board was nicely painted and has the Melissa & Doug 'logo' on it like the others that I have, so I am not sure at all what went wrong w/ the pieces.

I really wanted to like this toy! My son seems to like it so far but we've only had it for a few hours and I know it's going to fall apart soon. I'm an architect and can tell you these pieces are not handpainted. They are printed pieces of computer generated images adhered to the softest wood known as MDF. There is nothing hand made about this product- it has been laser cut and printed. I could have made this for two dollars! A beautiful concept but very poor execution-- not handmade at all! Spend your money on the more expensive wooden toys made with safe materials and longer lasting better sanded wood. I'm taking this product back!

My 2 year old daughter really loves this puzzle. She loves matching the shapes to the spots on the puzzle and she is also learning the names of the safari animals. These pieces do stand up on their own and my daughter likes to play with them separately from the puzzle. It is one of her favorite toys right now.

I'm not sure if they changed the product somewhere along the line, or if people were getting knock off items, but our puzzle is painted wood not stickers. It appears to be very durable.

My daughter received this for Christmas just before her 1st birthday. She loved the colors and enjoyed putting the animals on the board (with some help of course). The chunky pieces were very easy for her to grab and hold. She liked to crawl with the pieces and push them on the floor (crawling with them on the tile floor caused some wear on the paint though). She also liked to chew on them (which we tried to discourage), but didn't wear off the paint very much. This puzzle helped her learn/recognize colors and animals. She's now nearly 2 and still likes the puzzle. She also really likes the bug one that is similar to this one.

I really like this puzzle. The colors are true to the picture. It is made of good quality wood and the edges are smooth. No problem with splinters. The faces of the characters are so cute and appealing. This is a very durable and safe puzzle. It is a fun way to learn about some of the animals in the zoo. It is a good way for children to learn more about colors. I like that it helps develop those small motor skills, too. She will, also, learn about the differences in shapes and sizes. It takes a critical eye to match the puzzle piece to the right cut out. Puzzles are a good gift because the child does everything themselves. They don't push a button and have it done for them. They have been around for a long time for a reason. Note: If you have more then one puzzle, take a sharpie and put a number on the back of the puzzle and the same number on the back of each piece. It works perfectly and you have added another skill. Number recognition, take two or three puzzles and mix all their pieces together then let the matching begin. My two year old niece won't be able to use that skill yet but as she gets older she will and won't out grow the puzzle skills as fast.

Great quality! The pieces are solid chunks of wood with a screen printed image on it and the back and sides are painted a corresponding color. When the pieces are picked up, the image of that same piece is underneath it, so they don't have to decide where it goes by the shape alone.
We bought this and the Insect one for our 1 yr old for Christmas in 2013, so of course she needed help with it but the big chunky pieces were easy for her to hold and its just so bright and colorful!! It didn't get much play as a 'puzzle' but she liked to just play with the creature pieces. : )
It's almost a yr later and they still look great...just a couple of chips off the color but nothing really noticeable. It's not played with constantly, but whenever she comes across it she still plays with the pieces and tries to fit em into the puzzle board now!

I don't know what everyone is complaining about. I got this for my 21-month-old for Christmas and not only does she love it, but it's pretty high quality. The puzzle pieces don't just have stickers on them, they're definitely painted. My daughter loves putting it together. It was the least expensive, yet most loved gift for Christmas. I would recommend this! We also got her the Insects Wooden Chunky Puzzle and the Classic Peg Puzzle (Pack of 3). All were a hit!
