This classic wood block set includes 100 solid wood blocks painted bright red, blue, yellow, and green. A versatile variety of shapes are included: rectangular prisms, cubes, cylinders, half circles, arches, and two different sizes of rectangular planks and triangles.
The blocks come in a variety of sizes including the half-circle measuring about 1-1/2 inches long and the tallest rectangular plank measuring about 3-1/2 inches long. Their size, combined with the wonderful variety of shapes, makes them just challenging enough for younger children to manipulate. A three-year-old tester enjoyed trying to build towers and walls as tall as possible, as well as sorting the blocks by shape and color. And the smaller size of the blocks keeps them interesting for older children, too--so kids can easily get many years of use out of them.
Parents will appreciate the safe, durable construction of these blocks. Though they're made of solid wood, these blocks are light in weight, which makes them safer for small children. The blocks have rounded edges and a smooth painted finish that won't splinter with play.
The only drawback: while many Melissa & Doug toys come packaged in long-lasting, aesthetically pleasing storage containers, this set of blocks comes in a cardboard box. But while the box won't last forever, these blocks will. And as with all of their products, Melissa & Doug states that this toy is made with non-toxic coatings and meets or exceeds US toy testing standards.

Top customer reviews
I must say, I am not too happy with the quality of the blocks. Many of them are not finished well and a couple of them have hairline cracks. Some are not smooth enough and topple over easily, frustrating the toddler. The cardboard box it comes in is not for storing the blocks. We just use an open basket for it. For all these reasons, I did come close to returning this set.
That said, my toddler (and 8 year old) do play with this set quite often. You can see my 8 year old's handiwork in the picture.
I think my little one will grow into it once he's a bit older and gets more creative with the pieces. It will be useful to teach patterns, use the blocks as counters etc for other things to do with these blocks.
Packaging - All the individual units in a plastic pouch are packed in a cardboard box that also can be used as a storage box with a little plastic handle. It was shipped along with other items in a sturdy shipping box.
What is Good About It
These are colored wooden blocks of different shapes and sizes. Rectangles, cubes, cylinders, semi cylinders and scooped in rectangles. Wood is well finished with no sharp ends / edges or burrs colored to a vibrant appearance. It is very useful for a kid to learn about shapes , sizes and to improve child's motor skills ,hand-eye coordination, spatial skills, creativity, divergent thinking and social skills. Moreover, kids can integrate their own constructions into pretend play scenarios. There is also evidence that complex block-play is linked with advanced math skills in later life. The blocks do have vibrant colors which makes it more interesting for kids. Those colors are supposed to be safe for children ( As claimed by manufacturer).
What is not so Good about it
Nothing in particular however, the storage box is very delicate. You may want to use something else for storing the blocks instead of the retail box.
These toys help children in many ways developing their over all skills and analytical ability. This product is well worth every penny.
Would I recommend this product to a friend ?
Yes, I would.
A few thoughts:
1. They are much smaller than I expected. I used to have blocks of similar shapes and colors, but they were much bigger!
2. These blocks are made of a very lightweight wood. I imagine they will get beat up with regular use.
3. This is pretty picky for low-cost blocks, but there are a few knots/irregularities that make it hard to build very tall towers without "cherry picking" the best blocks.
Overall, a good value.
