Imaginative Play Is Always in Stock
With this sturdy, versatile toy as a setting, role play possibilities abound -- giving children ample opportunities to try out new vocabulary, resolve conflicts, observe consequences, and develop all kinds of interpersonal skills. With countless ways to stock the bins, label the merchandise, and make a sale, this wooden play set fuels creativity and sets the stage for imaginative play. Kids can take their cue from the pre-printed awning and set up a lemonade stand or a grocery store stocked with all their favorite things. But the simple, sturdy structure is also adaptable to other uses - -farmer’s market, clothing store, toy shop, and much more -- so it’s fertile ground for active imaginations, and an excellent idea booster for kids who need a little help in the creativity department.
What should go in each bin? How much will each item cost? When is the shop open and closed? Little shopkeepers will take pride in being the ones to make these decisions and more, building confidence and self-esteem. Just as beneficial: While kids are making these decisions during pretend play, they are also building simple analytic and problem-solving skills that will serve them for many years to come. As our child has aged, it's been easy to add on math lessons at the register and reading/writing lessons when shopping at the grocery store with recipes. You can also categorize by color or fruit/vegetable for younger kids. I used sugru to make a little hook to hold shopping bags, got some baskets and a shopping cart, a register, and groceries, of course.
I don't love all M&D products but this one I highly recommend. It's well-made and highly used.
Instead of using the chalk signs, I turned the bins around so that the little hook area faces the back. I also bought a cute little cash register that sits on top so that my girls can play grocery more realistically.
**Just a tip. My daughters love for their play to be realistic, so I did buy a set of paper money and plastic coins; however, I used packing tape to encase the bills (I don't have a laminator, and this worked just as well...maybe better because it makes the bills more pliable.) I also bought a set of 12 little cloth tote bags so that they can bag their groceries. They love these additions :-)
Pros: Kids love to play with it. It was easy to assemble. The awning is easy for them to switch from grocery to lemonade stand and back again.
Lots of opportunity for open ended play.
Cons: The bins are kind of thin. If you have rough and tumble kids it might not stand up to much abuse. Also, the small hinges that hold the tags are very flimsy. We haven't broken any yet but I can see it's not far off.
Overall: Kids like it and it was easy to assemble but it has some quality issues that makes me glad I bought it on sale.
