Melitta - a great way to make coffee.

We've been using a Melitta for our daily coffee needs for more years than I'll admit. The process is simple visceral, and more or less fool proof. The only downside is that glass breaks, and sooner or later, someone will drop the entire thing, making a replacement required. This is true for any glass container. I used to go down to the local A&P - they've long since closed, and ShopRite was carrying them up until about 6 months ago. I was very happy to find this here, and am happily making pour over / drip coffee again. One tip I've stuck with over the years: Burst the beans, then fill the cone. By this I mean fill the cone with enough water to cover the beans and let that small amount drip through. Wait a few seconds, then fill the cone with water and continue normally. This brings out a bit more flavor from the beans and makes a terrific pot of coffee.

I have been using the Melitta pour over cofeansfee brewer for about 30 years or more. i grind my coffee beans pour the beans into the filter and holder, heat the fresh water and my coffee is done as I prefer it. Its simple and inexpensive and takes up very little room on the counter. its major drawback is temperature control. But there are ways around this. If I'm using a hot water kettle (by the way available is most hotel rooms around the globe except in the USA) I wait 10 seconds after boiling for it to decrease to optimal temperature.. I've recently purchased a kettle that has temperature controls which makes the whole process much simpler. Perhaps I'm an old guy who still appreciates old simpler ways.

I have been using a Melitta Coffeemaker for years. I have had electric perk pots and electric drip models, but always come back to the Melitta. I find that it is the cleanest type of coffeemaker. No tiny tubes or water storage pots that you can't get clean. The plastic Dripper, with paper filters works well but I ordered the C Cup Stainless Steel Dripper to go along with this coffee pot. I wanted to replace the one that comes with the coffee pot because it is plastic and requires paper filters. This was the perfect combination. The Dripper fits perfectly into the Melitta Coffeemaker and I did not need to use a paper filter. When the water just starts to boil pour over the coffee grounds. This prevents the coffee from getting a burnt taste, not to hot. The pot sits perfectly safe on the warming center of my stove and stays hot until we finish it. I am enjoying this purchase and a great cup of coffee.

Had been using a Keurig for years because of its ease to use, but the coffee quality isn’t the same. I was introduced to Melitta at a friends cabin in the bush of Alaska. Simple. Boil water however you need to, pour over your grounds and have a great cup of coffee each and every time. I picked up the smaller Melitta first (#4 filter) and it’s nice, but not big enough for 3 or 4 people. So I went with the 10 cup (#6 coffee filter). We’ve been using it now for 3 years every day. Was in a slight hurry one morning and tapped the outer rim and it out a slight crack in the glass but still 100% functional. But I picked up another 10 cup for a backup to have on hand. We just love the quality of the coffee. It is difficult to find #6 filters here in Alaska, but this is remedied by buying a case of #6’s on Amazon. # 4’s can work in a pinch but #6 filters are the way to go. We also leave ours on the stove (both gas stove and a wood stove at the cabin) without issues. Nothing bad to say.

This works like it should -- This reviews purpose it to compare it to the single cup brew version of the melitta coffee maker. (e.g. the smaller version that comes with an optional cup instead of a carafe)

I actually use this to fill up my Stainless Steel Travel Mug and skip the carafe all together.
I like this better than my single cup filer because it is I can use the cheaper / easier to find 10-12 cup cone filters instead of 4 cup cone filters

Before I used a 10-12 cup filter in a 4-cup melitta coffee pour over brewer and I had the following problems
(NOTE THE PROBLEMS BELOW ARE CORRECTED BY USING THIS PRODUCT)
1) sometimes the coffee filter would "flop -into" itself
2) water would leak "outside the cone"
3) Towards the end of the brew, sometimes it was painfully slow since i had less "volume" to brew with

Now that I use this 10 cup brewer I don't have those problems.

Just a few notes.
1) Unlike the 4 cup brewer the bottom of the cone extends down into carafe -- this also makes the cone sturdier since not all the mass is above the "carafe top"

The hole in this brewer is larger than the hole in the 4 cup brewer.
You just need to pace your pour rate a little differently to get the strength /extraction you want.
Also just a tip -- when you first start to make a pot or cup , you will want slowly "wet" the coffee grounds initially by dripping water all over the top (not in jsut one place) once most of the coffee is "wet" you can freely start adding water. Otherwise you will have a weak pour -- (the dry coffee will stay on top of the water and will never be extracted)

This is the Best Carafe for Tea and Coffee

I've used this carafe for years to make both tea and coffee. It's easy to clean and to pour from. Because it's cleaned every time it's used there's no built-up off flavors. To make tea--either iced or hot--I put loose tea leaves in the carafe and pour boiling water over and let steep--usually 5 or 6 minutes. Then I pour through strainer into a serving pot which gives you perfect tea. For coffee, you use the plastic cone with a filter (or a metal filter) and pour boiling water through the coffee grounds. The only problem with this carafe is that it can break if you knock it against something, Just be careful and you will have years of delicious coffee and/or tea from this carafe.

I had a manual one growing up on the farm, and I always missed the flavour. I bought this and ended up getting another one as a gift, and this is non returnable so buyer beware.

That aside, I have a high end Zojirushi water boiler for the house (my wife loves her hot water/tea) bought when the last coffeemaker crapped the bed...so I use that at 208F and pour over. WHAT AN AMAZING DIFFERENCE! Controlling the pour releases much more flavour. The carafe stays really clean. There is no build up that ruins most drip coffee makers. Aromas and thickness is great...not watery brown water that most drip makers serve as coffee. This is almost French Press/Italian level.

Get one. Not only will it work during the Zombie apocalypse, but taking the time to brew better, you will be happier.
