Perfect Cup O Joe Every Morning

I love this pour-over! I have bought some for my family as well and they love them! Fits over most sizes of coffee cups and uses #2 coffee filters. My husband likes his coffee strong while I like mine mild - so we boil a kettle and are able to have our own perfect cup of coffee! Tip: put your cream and sugar in the cup before you pour-over the coffee - that way it will mix as it brews!

I did a taste test between pour-over and aeropress, and the pour-over won by a definite margin. It does take a little longer to get the coffee into the cup, though.

Basket filters are less than a penny apiece at the grocery store, but are a little large for the Melitta cone. However, the excess can be gathered and clipped fairly easily, as shown in pic.

There is a reason why these often have handles, and this one does not.

So it works fine as a coffee maker, but there is reason why these single cup pour over coffee makers have handles, and that's so that when your coffee is done you don't have to put your hand around a hot coffee maker to get it off the top of your mug, and to easily flip it over and empty the used filter full of grounds into the garbage. I can grab the longer lip at the top, but that is much more haphazard. I now have to think way more than I want to about a simple device first thing in the morning.

I can't believe I missed this design feature. I can't believe Melitta missed it too. I was ordering in a hurry.

I love a good, hot cup of coffee (decaf mostly) - and was looking for an alternative to the Keurig. While I'll still use the Keurig, especially when I need a completely fast & no-fuss cup of coffee, I find I just enjoy coffee too much, and the Keurig gets expensive over time. Plus, I'm part of the growing number of people becoming aware of the environmental impact of the K-cups.

I tried the reusable/refillable K-cup devices, but the coffee just didn't taste that good and setup/cleanup was troublesome/messy. I tried the French Press, but that didn't click for me either 1) because of the wait time, the coffee was never hot enough for me 2) I don't like the little bit of grounds I get in the cup sometimes 3) I didn't like trying to get the grounds out of that little filtered-presser thingy when cleaning 4) coffee always seemed to taste more acidic to me when using the French Press.

I use the method described in some of the reviews here: I heat the water in the microwave, add the coffee, stir ... and then pour through the filter & Melitta cone into my coffee mug. Faster than French press, so coffee stays hotter. The paper filter both reduces the acidity & eliminates the grounds in the cup of coffee. Final result: a tasty, hot cup of coffee. Easy cleanup, just dump the filter/grounds into garbage. OR, if get the organic filters, you can just compost the filter/grounds. Then a quick wash/rinse of the cone & whatever you heated up the water in.

Other benefits:
Doesn't take up a lot of room in the cupboard.
Inexpensive.
Can even use it for travel as you can get access to hot water.

Cheapest method to make a single cup of coffee

I'm somewhat of a coffee aficionado and I was happily surprised how simple and good the coffee comes out from using this system. In a matter of minutes one can make a perfect cup of coffee using this system. Since you control everything from the type of coffee to how fast you poor the water it's really easy to customize your coffee to be just right. However, there are some drawbacks with this system. First, by allowing you to use any coffee and nearly any ground size it can be a bit daunting to find the perfect cup. Personally, I've found that fine ground like you would buy pre-ground for a coffee maker works just fine. Secondly, you need to remember that it takes more than a cup of hot water to get 1 cup since the coffee absorbs a bit. I use the method I saw in a coffee place by me and pre wet the filter and then poor a bit of hot water into the grounds to soak them prior to pouring a cup. Lastly, the hardest part, which I'm still working on, is the pouring. For the perfect cup of coffee to be consistently good one must poor in a circular motion, best with a long nose kettle (don't have). However, you don't mind your coffee varying slightly cup by cup you can just pour the hot water into another cup, what I do, which allows the water to cool a bit so it doesn't burn the grounds (makes it taste bitter) and allows for better control. Overall, this is bar far the cheapest method to make a single cup of coffee and I would recommend it for anyone from beginner to advanced user. It's one of those things that gets even better as you get more practice using it.

- Cheapest method to make a single cup of coffee
- Super easy to clean
- Very customizable to get the perfect cup of coffee
- Tons of how to's online to tell you how to make the perfect cup of coffee
- Uses cheap #2 coffee maker filters

Cons:
- Can be daunting to use at first due to all the choices one has
- Difficult to get a consistent cup of coffee, though I've found even my worst tasted great (that's where the practice come in)
- To help with getting a consistent cup of coffee one can end up spending money on other equipment like a grinder and long neck kettle

Easy and convenient

Coffee is all about personal preference, and to me this little device makes better coffee than any machine I've had. I use ~1 heaping tablespoon of grounds per 6oz of water, which I heat to 200-205 degrees Fahrenheit. A lot of people say to use 2 tablespoons per 6oz. It's all preference and will depend on the coffee. Get #2 cones or you can just fold short basket filters. Either way, you will probably need to adjust the filter slightly during brewing in order to keep it flowing. It takes maybe 3 minutes to pour 12-16 oz of coffee, 5 minutes with prep. Mine looks brand new having just been rinsed after every use.

I use a glass measuring cup heated in the microwave as a pourer. If you're really into it, you can get a special kettle.
