While I'm older than the target audience for this album, I remember the extreme drama all relationships seemed to generate. 30 years ago this album would have spoken to the deepest fiber of my being. Now, I'm just so glad I grew out of that period of my life. I do respect the amazing amount of talent it takes to write and perform such an emotional album. You won't be disappointed to buy the album - and it might speak deeply to you depending on your stage of life.

Biased for sure, but love the record

When Lorde announced a new album the anticipation began for me, and I've been in love with Melodrama since its released. I'm saying this so you can take into account my bias toward the album and Lorde as an artist being that she is my favorite and why I gave it a 5-star review.

BUT I feel the need to point out the quality of this record as a fair warning to anyone who orders the deluxe edition. My first record got to Sober (track 2) and started skipping rather frequently. There are a fair share (not a ton to be honest, but enough that I noticed) of reviews on here that have the same experience I did. I think the manufacturer may have just made a bad batch or something. Not sure. But, if you do get one like this Amazon is quick to replace! I got my replacement exactly two days after like the regular prime shipping time frame. The new version works perfectly (so far, I've only played A side) and I'm very happy!

I'm giving this album 4 stars for the couple-of-songs on it I really enjoyed plus Lorde's bold concept of a double-take on her romance's rise/fall.

The album becomes enjoyable for me at the third from last track, "Supercut."

Up to then, I don't hear any conviction, though I know lots of people went crazy over this disc, showering with five-starred reviews. No doubt it has great appeal, and there's more to it than what I got out. I might go back later on and see a full set of songs I like.

For now, I haven't found anything that rocked me or brought me the slightest thrill until "Supercut." Right there all Lorde's conviction is back.

"Supercut" is a surging, wild-abandonment, rock-song. The next cut, "Liability (reprise)," is the musical, emotional culmination and center of the album. It sounds like a lot of Lorde went into it. It sounds like she's finally surfaced here after having been held under water from the opening track.

The preceding songs-- "Green Light," "Sober," "Homemade Dynamite," "The Louvre," "Liability," "Hard Feelings/Loveless," "Sober II (Melodrama)," and "Writer in the Dark" are super-sounding, and fun for the ears. Very well executed. But I don't see how they can move or rock you except at an abstract layer. They are the sound of Lorde trying out new things with a new producer, and it's excruciating. I don't hear that she's into these tunes at all. Sounds like she's being force-marched. "Green Light," first song on the album, signals a go-ahead to a crack-up, with lots of glorious teen-love highs and teen-low misery in between. "That green light. I want it." Fine.

Until "Supercut" arrives, these first muddled tunes endlessly debate with themselves about what was going on in the romance. Was it you? Was it me? Did I love you? Did I love me? Did anyone love anyone?

"Liability" is cry of dismay for all the harm fame has caused, with a self-pitying . Ditto the faux-claims to transcendence that seek to eke-out a triumph from the crash-sites marked by the songs"Hard-Feelings (Loveless)," "Sober II (Melodrama)," and "Writer in the Dark."

Once to "Supercut." the artist takes a panoramic sweep over the foregoing romance that was, that dazzling legendary burnt-out, long-gone gambol with the gods of teenage tenderness.

"Supercut" cuts to the chase:

"I'm someone you maybe might love
I'll be your quiet afternoon crush
Be your violent overnight rush
Make you crazy over my touch"

Til it comes down ,finally, to:

"In my head, I do everything right,
In my head, I forgive and don't fight."

The phrase "Forgive and don't fight" repeats over and over as the song winds forever toward a close, moving out deeper and further down into electronic static on a surging, receding surf fade-away.

"Liability (reprise)" has real soul, and it supplies ravishing Lorde harmonies to deliver the only meaningful moment of the whole Melodrama. As she sings, it seems, to the mirror, a moment of redemption gleams back in gratitude.

Then comes the finale, "Perfect Places" a sarcastic paen to the "loveless generation." The wham-bang, jangling, slight-return of "Perfect Places," whispers sweetly, but lacking sincerity, "Please, another round of poison for me." At the same time, the song's lyrics aren't without poignancy, and it's a well put together production with a good melody.

(Of some interest, in terms of pure pop-artist dialoguing, is how Lana del Rey, who always casts wide a sin-fin of allusions, seems to allude her song about the Hollywood Sign in "Lust for Life" to Lorde's "Perfect Places" and "Green Light," while Lorde alludes to "Ultraviolence" in the opening chords of "Melodrama.")

030320 Update-- I went back and listended to this the other day, after much time had passed. I have a higher opinion of it now. The electonic sound concepts on it are wonderful and are a step forward from Lorde's first album. "Supercut" and "Liability" still stood out for the reasons I mentioned, the latter song being tops, I think. She missed a great song-writing and multi-instrumentalist-musician-collaborator going without Joel Little, and the song quality shows a difference. Album number one sound so brilliant because of the two of them. Still, Lorde's awfully good on this record.

This is a great album. Some of the early reviews of the pressing on this site made it seem like ordering this vinyl was a bad idea, because none of them seemed to play well. That does not appear to be the case with every pressing of the album as the copy I received played extremely well with the only "sound" other than the music being a few soft pops/clicks in between songs, which I don't consider to be a defect. While I am sure that among the thousands of copies of this record there are a few bad apples, as reflected in the unhappy reviews, do not let that deter you from getting this wonderful album on vinyl.

Another slow-growing musical experience. First impression after the stellar debut was slight disappointment, but give this one more time and listening rounds and it will pay back with interest.
Lorde's voice does not need any introductions anymore. Songs written on this piece of pearl are one degree deeper and more intimate than the debut, up to level creating chills and goosebumps. Recommend listening with high quality headphones.

Get the Deluxe Version before it's Gone

I bought the deluxe version when it was the same as the standard version and was a little worried that I wouldn't get the limited vinyl, but since they were the same price it wouldn't bother me as much. To my surprise and delight, I received the deluxe version of the vinyl (which is surprising for a 2017 release). The blue is translucent when help up to the light but otherwise matches with the colors in the cover art. The pressing was alright, as most vinyls are, but after playing it through I will say that it did not skip in any of the songs. Definitely a steal.

Incredible album, terrible vinyl

This is one of my favorite albums of all time, so I had to have it on vinyl. I bought 3 other albums around the same time as this one, and 2/4 are unplayable, this being one of them. The needle gets hung throughout the record and requires that I move the needle to continue listening. It’s extremely disheartening, especially since i basically wasted around $45 on the two records. Don’t buy your vinyl from amazon. Just don’t do it.

I'm reviewing the vinyl and not the album. Lorde is a very wonderful singer and song writer and this album is genius. However, the vinyl skipped on almost every track which was a huge disappointment as it's one of my favourite albums.

Following the brilliant Pure Heroine was never going to be easy. But Lords has done an admirable job of producing a worthy second offering. And it is an offering - another piece of Lorde, if you will. But whereas Heroine was a slightly rebellious, teenage-angst fuelled, "Here I Am" to the music world, Melodrama is a more mature reflection on the feedback and fallout of what impact fame, fortune and infamy has had on Lorde's world. Still personal, still incisive yet still identifiable and relatable.

Totally different and yet more of the same. You'd expect nothing less from her. 5 stars.

This album is so mature for being Lorde's second album. It is a masterpiece in most aspects and should've won the Scammy's. Lorde's lyricism is once again brilliant with a plethora of metaphors and heartfelt songs. This album is easily on the same level as Pure heroine if not surpasses it and is criminally underrated. Melodrama is a must-listen for almost anyone, and especially people who would typically listen to Indie/alternative.
