The title seems to this reader to be fun and interesting, helping the reader to think about they will engage with the story overall before even starting in. The overall design of the book is intriguing. The cover image for the book is dark and haunting, conveying the right sense of menace and romance that permeates the book. What carries the book so well has to do with the narration here, the tough and wry sense in which a vulnerable character is developed and tells her own story. Spencer is a delightful mix and mash up of old school noir PIs as well as the more modern take on the mystical and spiritual detective, one who can see and sense as well as rely on guts and intuition. The pace of the chapters might have something to do with the success of the novel. Throughout there are passages of solid descriptive writing, moments of great clarity and insight. -- Judge, 3rd Annual Writer's Digest Self-Published eBook Awards
