Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 1–A little green crocodile arrives in the city on Christmas Eve to visit Santa at a department store; alas, the jolly old man is no longer there. Meanwhile, a little yellow dog named Melrose is new in town and depressed because he is all alone. Luckily, they find one another and spend a fine Christmas together. There isn't much plot here, and the scenes are somewhat disjointed, but the artist's watercolor illustrations carry the day. The sweet-looking animals wandering about a snowy, joyous city that's bustling with holiday activity will strike a chord with children, who will instantly guess that Croc and Melrose are meant to become friends.–Eva Mitnick, Los Angeles Public Library

From Booklist

Croc, a small crocodile, has come to the big city to visit Santa Claus, but it's Christmas Eve, and Santa has already gone out on his rounds. Melrose is a wealthy dog, new to the city, and lonely, and he doesn't want to put up a tree without a friend. The story is slight; even a preschooler will be able to see where it's going. But the artwork is marvelous, and the real feelings of loneliness (and eventually happiness) that are accentuated at Christmastime come through loud and clear. Since the story is predictable, most of the interest is in the pictures, and Clark doesn't disappoint, effectively using light and shadow, which changes the mood of the story far more than the words do. Each picture is also chockablock with things to see: people, presents, even palm trees smack in the middle of the snowy weather. A pleasant holiday offering. Ilene Cooper

Such a nice book. Neat illustrations and tells of a nice friendship that evolves. This would be a great Christmas book for those that are looking for a story without religious undertones. It's a story about friendship that happens to take place around the Christmas time.

Just curious... Wondering where this takes place?? Palm trees and snow. I would like to visit!

Our now almost 6 year old daughter found this book while we were traveling in the UK and immediately took to it. We read it over and over and she really loved it. As parents, we love the message of friendship and inclusion, and think it's both fun and educational. Strongly recommend it for all young kids.

Not the typical Christmas story. Melrose and Croc create a wonderful Christmas after a shaky start. Nice message of friendship.

My kids picked this up randomly at our local library and fell in love with the characters. Although Melrose and Croc are perhaps clearly destined to become friends, I do think some things about the story are very nicely done. Both the animals are sad and "crash" into one another while skating. They both apologize to one another and then go for tea and pour out their troubles. We really liked this modeling of politeness, communication and empathy. We now have several Melrose and Croc books which the kids love. The Christmas theme is completely secular (Santa, decorating, presents, friendship).

I loved this reading this book to my kids. They enjoyed these animals and felt for their plights. Emma Chichester Clark's illustrations were warm and amusing and the incongruity of the cold and snowy winter scenes in the city next to the sandy palm-lined beaches added an odd and interesting touch.
