The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes is a collection of Sherlock Holmes stories, originally published in 1893, by Arthur Conan Doyle. Doyle had decided that these would be the last collection of Holmes's stories, and intended to kill him off in the last adventure "The Final Problem". Readers wanted him to write more adventures featuring Sherlock Holmes, so Doyle released The Hound of the Baskervilles years later. He followed that up with The Return of Sherlock Holmes, in which Holmes relates how he survived.

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (1859 - 1930)
Sir Arthur Ignatius Conan Doyle was born in 1859 in Scotland. He is best known for his stories about the ingenious detective, Sherlock Holmes, and his sidekick Dr. Watson. Doyle was educated as a physician and began writing stories while studying medicine. He published his first novel, A Study in Scarlet, in 1887. He followed that with three more novels and more than fifty short stories about Sherlock Holmes. His work was a milestone in crime fiction. Doyle also produced a number of other fantasy and science fiction stories. He credited his former university teacher, Joseph Bell, as the inspiration for Holmes.
Many Holmes stories first appeared in magazines
Sherlock Holmes stories first came out between 1887 and 1927. The most popular and common method of publishing these kinds of stories was through the use of popular magazines. Many if not most of the Sherlock Holmes stories first appeared in magazine format, most notably The Strand Magazine, but also others including Colliers and Liberty.
The material was later combined in the novels that SeaWolf Press has published. Many illustrations for our books came from those magazines. The last book, The Case-Book of Sherlock Holmes, has 65 illustrations from 3 different magazines.

About the authors

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was born in Edinburgh in 1859 and died in 1930. Within those years was crowded a variety of activity and creative work that made him an international figure and inspired the French to give him the epithet 'the good giant'. He was the nephew of 'Dickie Doyle' the artist, and was educated at Stonyhurst, and later studied medicine at Edinburgh University, where the methods of diagnosis of one of the professors provided the idea for the methods of deduction used by Sherlock Holmes.
He set up as a doctor at Southsea and it was while waiting for patients that he began to write. His growing success as an author enabled him to give up his practice and turn his attention to other subjects. He was a passionate advocate of many causes, ranging from divorce law reform and the Channel Tunnel to the issuing of inflatable life-jackets to sailors. He also campaigned to prove the innocence of individuals, and his work on the Edjalji case was instrumental in the introduction of the Court of Criminal Appeal. He was a volunteer physician in the Boer War and later in life became a convert to spiritualism.
His greatest achievement was, of course, his creation of Sherlock Holmes, who soon attained international status and constantly distracted him from his other work; at one time Conan Doyle killed him but was obliged by public protest to restore him to life. And in his creation of Dr Watson, Holmes's companion in adventure and chronicler, Conan Doyle produced not only a perfect foil for Holmes but also one of the most famous narrators in fiction. Penguin publish all the books about the great detective, A Study in Scarlet, The Sign of Four, The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes, The Hound of the Baskervilles, The Return of Sherlock Holmes, The Valley of Fear, His Last Bow, The Casebook of Sherlock Holmes, The Uncollected Sherlock Holmes and The Penguin Complete Sherlock Holmes.

I have been reading Sherlock Holmes mysteries in the order of publication. I have enjoyed every one of them. I suppose I should emphasize that I am a fan of British Victorian Literature. As police investigations they are seldom complete. It is the writing that I enjoy as much as the mysteries.
In the event that one has heard of Professor Moriarty in regard to Sherlock Holmes, he does finally appear here in the last story, "The Final Problem". I suppose I should also mention that I have found all of these stories on line at no cost. However for .99, I was very glad to have purchased this collection. I am reading and listening to a corresponding audiobook of Sherlock Holmes stories and am really enjoying he experience.
In summary, I have really enjoyed this fine collection. These are stories that adults and children can enjoy. Each story can be read in one or two reasonably length sittings. I am really glad to have come across this collection. Thank You for taking the time to read this review.
The stories are just long enough for a reading before bed or on a moderate train commute. I had the pleasure of reading this whilst in London and so many of the landmarks and streets are still present and familiar that its a treat to imagine Holmes and Watson on Fleet Street, the Strand, at Waterloo station and elsewhere. Each story is unique and there is not a dull or superfluous detail in any of the stories. They are just perfect.
From all the other books and flicks I've encountered, I never realized how very human the great Sherlock Holmes was as portrayed by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. The man was self-taught in his skills of observation and deduction. Although his mind was quite orderly and systematic, his personal apartment was not. Watson was not only a friend, traveling companion, admirer, biographer and sounding-board in Holmes' cases, but he was also the detective's personal physician. Holmes was not as much of an opium addict as some of our modern films would have us believe. However, he was prone to depression, when his mind was not occupied with a case. He was by no means a ladies' man, and in fact seems to have lacked some social skills. He was so dedicated to truth and honesty that he had no use for false humility. He even expressed the logic of believing in God. I could go on and on, as this book was filled with unexpected gems of insight into Holmes' mind and soul.
I loved that each chapter of the book was a single case. The length of these short stories was just right for me to read on my portable device, using the Kindle app, during lunch breaks, at the breakfast table, etc. Each was a stand-alone story with its own unique characteristics, highlighting a particular aspect of Holmes that Watson wished for his readers to appreciate. I was able to anticipate some, but not all of the plot lines, which is always a sign of a good mystery writer.
I didn't care for the excerpts from other books at the end of this eBook. I wish e-publishers did not feel they need to include these teasers in their books.
The book was well-written, clean and engrossing. I recommend it to anyone who enjoys reading detective stories, but does not have the time to invest in a full-length novel about a single case.
