Blending fiction with memoir, Dan Skinner pulls off a masterful feat of storytelling, turning the lens of recall inward as he explores the seminal moments in a young man’s life that redefined how he thought about himself and set him on a path of discovery that will eventually lead to first love, forever love.
The year is 1967, the year of David’s awakening, the year when he realizes he’s not like everyone else. Dan Skinner has an uncanny ability to recreate the essence of a time and place, to capture moments of clarity, and to place his characters solidly within an organic matrix. Back then, it was the small incidentals that mattered: family, friendships, a certain pace to life that made it all seem simple and simplistic, though it was anything but.
David’s family is working class and supportive, Ryan comes from privilege with a father intent on controlling and living through his son’s achievements. Their futures are mapped differently, but not their dreams. As these two young men flourish and grow, they come to terms with their emotions and their sexuality, and it is the tender moments that rise to the forefront. The special times when being together makes them more than the sum of their parts.
The pace to the storytelling is languid, the characters familiar, the conflicts minimized yet ever present. Forty years later, what David remembers is how it felt to love. We feel it, we bask in that radiance, yet as time passes so does the sense of rightness and inevitability.
The shock of violence, its consequences and the turmoil it unleashes, tear their idyllic lives asunder and for the remainder of David’s life he will carry the raw wounds of that moment, existing in a world no longer simple, no longer filled with promise.
David’s memoir takes us on a journey of joy and despair, of longing and fulfillment, and in the end there is hope.
Memorizing You is beautifully written, courageous and gut-wrenchingly authentic to the time and place, and filled with those small moments that will resonate in your heart. This is a book to savor and re-read, with a box of tissues at hand.
This book is a highly recommended read, FIVE STARS.
Ryans dad had big plans for Ryan and they did not include Ryan being with David or any other guy. David's family supported him and Ryan, they just wanted hm to be happy.
Onr faithful night Ryans dad caught then together. David woke up with non life altering injuries. Ryan wasn't so lucky. He was severely injured and he lost his memory, not remembering anything nt even his mom.
Ryans mom took him away, unknowingly to David to heal. David could never forget his first and only true love. Decades later Ryan woul also prove he cold never forget his first and only true love either. If you love Hea' this is a must read.
If you want a down to earth love story then this should be your pick. I'll say it took me 3 nights to read it ONLY because I didn't want it to end, I HAD to draw it out!
In here you'll find the discovering of one's sexuality, first love, true love, dedicated love, unforgettable love, love everlasting, not to mention a realistic evolving definition of friendship; and that pertains to more than just the two main characters! I'm literally crying while trying to write this review, that's how impacting this story was on me.
Dan will have you laughing and crying as if you were engaged with your closest friends, that is how in depth and realistic his characterizations are; your BFF or your Own True Love will be hard pressed to "one-up" these guys!
I've read a couple of reviews of this tale stating that upon finishing it they immediately wanted to start reading it again. I usually immediately remove the story from my Kindle when I've finished.....well, it's still on my Kindle because this one I will definitely read again, and soon!
Do yourself a favor; get a nice cold drink, a relaxing comfortable chair and open your heart to one of the best romantic love stories you'll ever encounter!! And who knows, perhaps there will be bluebirds this year!!
