This is a book that has to be read by anyone interested in the history of mankind. It is the first book out there to propose this extraordinary hypothesis about many of the ancient ruins we are still unclear about the purpose of. This is a whole new field that will open up, and it started with this book.

I think the basic idea that landscapes, natural and artificial, can be utilised by the evolutionarily ancient place memory system identified in the hippocampus, to support prodigious memory feats, is very likely to be true. It also seems intrinsically UNLIKELY that every example the author rates as a 'perfect' example of a memory space or a restricted performance space was in fact utilised in that way. I think the thesis would be even more convincing if it were presented in a more circumspect, less certain manner. A fascinating read, in spite of this minor irritation.

Worthwhile read, gives a fresh insight into the purpose of Neolithic structures. It also reveals that many of our religious and belief systems are based on memory codes where we use symbolism as memory aids.
