About the author

Sarah E. James is an art historian and writer. Her research specialisms include the art and material culture of the former East Germany; the visual cultures of the Cold War; contemporary art; the history of photography; photobooks; documentary practices and photojournalism; ephemeral art practices including the global and activist networks of mail art; art and activism/socialism, and the historical avant-gardes. Her first book 'Common Ground: German Photographic Cultures Beyond the Iron Curtain' was published by Yale University Press in 2013. Her next book 'Paper Revolutions: An Invisible Avant-Garde' is forthcoming with the MIT Press. As well as publishing numerous book chapters and journal articles, Sarah has contributed essays to many major exhibition catalogues. She is an art critic and writes frequently for Art Monthly, Frieze and Photoworks. She regularly gives public lectures and talks at museums and galleries.
