Author Rapoport certainly lived out a Beat fantasy, and this travelogue offers a fascinating peek into the various offbeat characters and subcultures to be found in life on the road. Rapoport's table of contents, which organizes 47 chapters within three sections, is a helpful road map in tracking his extensive journeys. He creates suspense for the next installment, given his intriguing hints about upcoming spiritual experiences and a possible reconciliation with the girlfriend he left behind in Boston. Honest, colorful account of free-wheeling adventures and self-exploration.

"I basically documented what it's like to give it all up and become a vagabond in contemporary America and other countries as well. I saw a lot and had a vast array of experiences. I sailed through storms, hitch-hiked across the country, worked under the table illegally in a foreign country. One day I almost died of thirst on a desolate highway. Another day in California I was invited to party with a movie producer who took me riding down Hollywood Blvd. in his 130,000 dollar sports car. The journey I took was soul changing. I went from a privileged life of having every comfort to being a wanderer with only a backpack. Though I saw a lot of dark stuff, like a guy dying in Honduras, drug-use, environmental degradation, and poverty, overall the two year trek made me a better person. I threw myself into the unknown and I survived. I saw the lighter and darker parts of human-kind. My journey was an alchemical one. What I mean by that is the voyage purified me. Just as ancient alchemists tried to strip down lesser metals and turn them into gold, that is what the road did to me. It stripped me down, turned me into my best, hardest, and purest form. It made me a man."

If you want to learn how to travel with little money, or none for that matter, this could be your bible. It is a true story of how a young man follows his heart and gives up everything for the sake of travel, no matter how rough the road got. It is certainly an adventure from start to finish, from the author hitchhiking across the US, sailing the carribean, and traveling to Central America. As the author travels, you travel with him, and as he learns about how to get around, you also learn his inner life, and the knowledge and wisdom that an adventure can bring forth. It is a modern, real life, hero story. Funny, dangerous at times, Adam Ross Rapoport has captured something, and wrote about it well. I laughed, I cried, I read it without being able to put it down. Bravo, five stars.

Sometimes books, movies, music, and art can have an astounding effect on you. So much so that it literally makes you re-evaluate your belief system, purpose, and life style. Adam is authentic, courageous, passionate, and true to his beliefs and moral code. It is evident that he knows his purpose. This story that he shares makes one realize many things about themselves and the person that Adam is. In a time when social media, technology, and money are at the forefront of most peoples beliefs, Adam follows his heart. His voice is unique and he is a superb and entertaining story teller. That little voice we all have inside our heads is the voice of the book. Adam is truly the architect of his own life. Adam sublimely teaches the reader that one will never know their full potential unless they push themselves to find it. It's this self discovery that takes us to the wildest places on earth and leads us to meet someone the most unique people on the planet and Adam has done that in a remarkable way. Memory of a Vagabond is one of the most enlightening books I have ever read and will be the first book that I recommend if asked about a good book to read.

An Utmost Pleasure

This is the kind of book where when you start getting towards the end, you don't want it to end. I enjoyed it so much, when getting towards the end you feel like you're saying goodbye to an old friend. Page turner and an absolute pleasure. When I finished this book, I thought "Auf Wiedersehen", meaning "until we meet again". Looking forward to part two.
