Editorial Reviews
From Publishers Weekly
Company K of the 84th Division reached Europe in early November 1944, five months after D-Day, and was quickly ordered to Germany, where the Allied armies were advancing against furious resistance. Two members of the company present a vivid picture of the fierceness of front-line fighting in WW II as they follow the unit from Geilenkirchen through the battle for Wurm, back to Geilenkirchen and through the Battle of the Bulge to occupation duty. The authors avoid sentimental cliches in their depiction of a group of triumphant citizen-soldiers. Readers who are not veterans of Company K, however, may find the final chapters, about the post-war lives of these ex-GIs, anticlimactic. From Library Journal
This is the true account of a World War II rifle company. Formed of men from all parts of the country, Company K, 333rd Infantry, 84th Division saw more than one hundred days of combat, through the Battle of the Bulge to the Elbe River. Thirty-six men died, and nearly two hundred more were casualties by the time the war ended. Unusually well written, this account, as told in the words of the survivors, shows the side of war at which Keith Winston's V . . . Mail: letters of a World War II combat medic ( LJ 9/15/85) could only hint. The authors, former company officers, have drawn the battle and postwar experiences of these men and their families into one smooth, flowing narrative. Highly recommended for most collections. George F. Scheck, Naval War Coll. Lib., Newport, R.I.

Dad was a forward observer for the heavy weapons company (Company M) supporting King Company throughout much of its work in Geilenkirchen and then in the Ardennes. He later transferred to K because (1) they needed officers and (2) he found them to be the best of the infantry with whom he worked. Because of this book - and not because of anything he told me - I know of 4 or 5 times when Dad was within inches of death: an unexploded grenade landing at his feet, tank round nearly taking his head off, neck wound while helping a wounded officer, a mortar blast among a group of soldiers, and his duel with a couple of machine gunners. This book helped me to a greater understanding of Dad, William D. Masters Jr. For that fact alone I am thankful for it.

This is a unique book. I suspect it is out of print, but for anyone studying WWII, it is quite valuable. The book contains first-person accounts from the "men of company K," put into book form by two men who survived the war in Company K. It is a much different point of view from the view of scholars who have written about the war. These two men lived the war.
Honestly? I didn't really LIKE reading it. Too many times I stopped and shed tears for these men and the way they had to live and fight. But I still find it invaluable in understanding what WWII was like for the men on the front line.

For anyone who would like to get a 'boots-on-the-ground' understanding of the Battle of the Bulge in the winter of 1944-45, I recommend this fascinating, sometimes chilling (literally-it was an extremely cold winter), description of one US Army rifle company's experience as told by the company members themselves: ordinary Americans who managed under severe conditions to do extraordinary things. Young folks should read more histories like this very personal account of the beginning of the end of World War II in Europe: memories collected and organized by company leaders who were there.

I enjoyed Stephen Ambrose's collection of soldiers' experiences in Europe during the war. He recommended this as one of the best written by actual soldiers. I am enjoying the in-depth account written by two members of Company K.
